New Girl Recommendation

Link

I recommend the show “new girl” its on Netflix and has about 7 seasons. I remember being hooked on it bc of the funny characters. Tbh my aunt was the one who introduced me to it, at first I was hella hesitant to watch it cus it didn’t seem as good but then the first season showed me how entertaining it is. Its based on this girl named Jessica Day, she’s ode bubbly and quirky and she’s living with her four roommates in downtown LA. Her four roommates are what makes this show mad funny because of their different personalities all clashing in.  The boys names are Winston Schmidt, Nick ,Coach, and Winston Bishop. Since both Winstons have the same first name, everyone calls Schmidt by his last name. Schmidt is hella confident, driven and uptight, he is known to be mad fussy and have OCD. He tries endless of times to get with this Jessicas best friend, Cece, she’s such a pretty model, laid back and is always there for Jessica. Near the end of the show, he finally gets with her which is not surprising because of the endless attempts he did just to be with her. Jessicas love interest/roommate, Nick, is dumb funny and loves being sarcastic. Hes a bartender in Chicago where their crew hangs out at. Winston is a very loyal and kind friend, there was one point in the show where he was doing a puzzle and realized he was colorblind and that made him mad upset. Lastly we have Coach, whose real name is Ernie he got the name coach when he was stepping in as a coach where Winston was playing and took over the team. Ever since that, they all agreed to call him Coach he even dresses as a coach always wearing a whistle around his neck. They all are there for each other going thru mad diff typa experiences from the smallest things to the biggest things. Some of the funniest convos they have would have to be in their bathroom, they are either arguing over something or bothering one of their roommates. Something that is cool about their bathroom is that they don’t have a regular toilet, its bathroom stalls. Jessica is someone who is hella confused most of the time and does stuff that she automatically regrets. She literally is the main character bc this show is based around her and what she does. Her best friend Cece lives in a diff apt complex wit this russian model who is very funny because of hardcore she is. I deff reccomend this show if you enjoy stuff that is light and funny. Theres a mix of everything in this show so I feel like everyone will find something or someone that they like in this show.

Jamilia Lyiscott & Vershawn Young – Fatima C

My initial reactions while witnessing both “Three ways to speak English” by Jamilia Lyiscott and “Should writer use they own English” written by Vershawn Young is that they both have their own type of writing styles and speeches. Also, their share a similarity when speaking about how using your type of English/slang should not affect them as a writer or put them any lower that someone else.  Vershawn writes using his type of slang throughout the whole essay and speaks about how students are taught on how to write and speak with the expected form of English and if they use a different form such as using their slang it’s an incorrect form. Something that he says that stood out to me was when he speaks about Fish saying “What he really mean by this rhetorical question is that the “multiculturals” should be thrilled to leave they own dialect and learn the other one, the one he promote”. I found this to be especially interesting because he speaks about how Fish promotes students that their own way of using English should be forgotten and about how they should adapt to the right way of writing. Verhsawn however doesn’t practically agree with this statement because all throughout the essay he speaks in the way that is more street like and something that he is more used to. During Jamila’s Ted talk she mentions how she is multilingual speaking street, Jamaican and then the formal English. She highlights the fact if she uses a different type of an English, street English, it should not be affecting her as a writer nor making her feel less of a writer.  Both Jamilia and Vershawn feel as if they need to get a point across they don’t exactly have to speak a certain way. They can get a point across by speaking a different form of English. A message that I collected from them both is that your writing style should not be any lower that something that is norm and you should still be able to get your point across no matter the situation. I think I both agree and disagree with their statements that they presented.  On one hand I do agree that your own writing style shouldn’t affect you as a writer also the fact that its still a form of writing. However, I disagree with the point that the point should be able to get across because what if the reader doesn’t understand the slang and form of writing that is being portrayed.

“Shitty First Drafts” Post Fatima Chaudhary

Anne and George both have different views on their first draft. George is a perfectionist and likes to view and tweak his writing as he writes the first draft. Anne on the other hand tends to write freely because she sees this as a first draft and knows that people will not view the first draft more so of the final draft . I describe my writing style to a bit of both of them because even though I know that no one will see my first draft and that I can write however I want, I still like to tweak it around a bit so when it comes time for the final draft I’m not rushing it and trying to make it sound perfect. I just really have to fix the minor issues like grammar. As a writer I like to tweak my writings as I write or after fully finishing writing everything. As a current a writer, what works best for me is doing the first draft first, then coming back to it later and tweaking it around adding the final touches. I tend to write the first draft really roughly but do like tweaking it as I write the first draft, then coming back to it and adding the final touches.

Mute In An English- Only World Fatima Chaudhary

Chang Rae-Lee chose to name this essay “Mute In An English- Only World” based on his mother. When Chang chose the word mute, he was referring to his mother not having contact with other people in an English speaking world because of her language barrier. She often would feel troubled, hurt and in shame when having to face the outside world knowing that her English would cause people to look down open her. In the essay, Chang brings up a story in which his mom had said oxtail in her language on accident, causing the butcher to give her a sour look leaving the mom almost in tears. His Mom would barely talk or interact with other people in fear of their reactions, leaving her “mute” hence the title of this essay. She carried a mini notebook everywhere helping her with English and forming sentences.  Even with the notebook she would often mix up the words making people giving her rude looks. This is why Chang named this essay “Mute in An English- Only World” because of his moms daily struggles communicating with the outside world.

Edward P Jones “The First Day”

While reading “The First Day” by Edward P Jones the first thing that struck out to me was the sentence where the author states “long before I learned to be ashamed of my mother”.  This struck out to me because the author was claiming to be ashamed of the mom which is something that shouldn’t happen when the mom did everything for them. The author was ashamed of her mom because later on it then indirectly states that the mom cant read or write when it came to fill out a form stating “1 can’t read it. I don’t know how to read or write, and I’m asking you to help me.”. The author is most likely embarrassed because right after the women couldn’t understand the mom she look toward the author asking if they can help her. An inference I can make out of her first day of school is that this her a new beginning for her and she’s excited to have a new fresh.

a picture I took on a helicopter I went on for my 16th birthday

Hey everyone! My name is Fatima Chaudhary, I normally go by Fatima. My preferred pronouns are she/her. I don’t have a preference on how to pronounce my name I just liked to be called how its spelt.  I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and lived here all my life except for a few months when I was about 13 to move upstate New York. I attended Edward R Murrow High-school for all my 4 years. I met so many amazing people in that school such as my best friend. I am ethnically from Pakistan and speak/understand Urdu and Punjabi, making me technically know 3 languages including English. Being Pakistani is something I’m very proud of because of my amazing culture and food. During my free time I love to spend time with my family, I tend to be very close to my family and have such a great bond with them. I also love to explore different types of cultures and learning about where people are from. Some sports that I love watching/playing are basketball, volleyball and soccer. I love to listen to music making me not have a specific language/genre my favorite. I dont care about where the music is from as long as I can vibe out to it. I love cooking and exploring new cuisines that ive never tried. My dad and I usually bond over our love for food. Some of my favorite things to cook would defiantly be lasagna. Covid has changed a lot of my life because before covid I would always be out exploring what the world has to offer. But since covid hit NYC, I am usually home and not trying to risk others in my area with covid. During my years in Baruch I hope to meet new people and find out who I really am.
