Representation

I chose this clip because of the risks and sacrifices people make to give their kids a better life. This adult was not the father of the kid who he sacrificed his life for, but he did it to give a chance to find his mother who he crossed the boarder for. Crossing the broader is not easy, regardless if it was legal or illegal due to the conditions of starting from scratch in a country they rarely know. I believe the same way he sacrificed his life for the kid is the same way my dad would sacrifice a lot for me. Same goes with other parents who sacrifice a lot more for their kids and to provide them with a future.

Rocket League Recommendation

My recommendation is in the gaming field, although my game time has significantly decreased due to the start of college and what comes with college. Regardless after completing most of my work I reward some time with some games. The game that I play a lot is a free to play game called “Rocket League”. It can be found on Playstation, Xbox and PC. It came out in 2015 and it’s still popular today, playing this throughout Middle and High-School was very fun throughout my life.  the objective of the game is to play car soccer or other given game modes within the game to win and get high ranks. Each game is 5 minutes long and if the game is tied at the end of the timer it goes into overtime where then it is golden goal, the first team who scores wins the game. The ranked scene is very popular and competitive within the community. The community in the game is also something that is very important and it relates to this recommendation I am making, they have their own language and terminology with the game to better understand each other to win the game. Some simple terms would be a 3 stack where a group of 3 players will all play together in a pre made squad. Within the community, one of the most infamous terms would be “What a Save!”. This is a very toxic term because it will raise tension to the other team and mess up with their mentality and make more mistakes. It is used when scoring making it seem like the goal scored by the messengers was an easy goal and is being very sarcastic with the statement. As well as the game being about car soccer, I really enjoy it because I do really like soccer ever since a young age. It combines really well because I am able to merge my soccer language with my rocket league language. Other than soccer there are many other modes to play casually and have fun. The skill level in this game is very high so an above average player will not have a good change when playing against someone on the higher ranks of the game. This game involves patience and a lot of practice if someone tries to get better learning many different tactics and plays they can make on the field. Very similar to being a College Student, putting in the time in the right places will benefit compared to just being at lectures and writing unorganized notes that will not help you. Overall I really have fun playing this game during my free time either solo or with friends which do make the game way more fun. Sometimes there will be impulsive language but its all part of the game and it will be irrelevant after the game because you will already be in the next because of the fast queue times. Staying focused in this game is very beneficial just like staying focused in school.

Vershawn Young and Jamila Lyiscott – Julian Duran

When reading about Vershawn Young and listening to Jamila Lyiscott about english, I’ve noticed many similarities with the message they are trying to spread about the English Language today. Both explain how English has been changing and it is not the same as it was not so long ago. To set aside the differences first, Vershawn Young explains how culture has an impact towards how certain people speak English, and that is what they’re accustomed to. A brief example could be the English that I speak would be difference to how a British person may speak, we both speak English but the British have different terminology and slangs to describe certain things. Which allows to British to believe we speak a broken english compared to them. As Jamila Lyiscott was saying in her speech, the new “norm” would be to say What’s Good to your professor instead of hello or other forms of greetings. Something that Lyiscott also mentioned was her effort to stop her other tongues from expressing themselves in places like the classroom or at a workspace. I find this interesting because it is very similar to Gloria Anzaldua’s, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” and how an accent or ones’ terminology can make a difference when speaking English, in Anzaldua’s passage, their problem was trying to get rid of their accent so they wouldn’t be in classes that will require her to lose the accent. But because we all experience different things coming from different cultures everyone should use their own English, which is the main point of what Vershawn is trying to express in his passage. I believe everyone should be able to use their own language and what they have been taught throughout their life wherever they can. Some words could be passing the line of disrespect and not be recommended to say those types of words. I believe people can be more productive and engaged with their peers and assignments when they are able to use the language they use everyday for their friends and casual interactions. There shouldn’t be one proper form when there are so many “tongues” across the World and English Speaking countries.

First Draft Response

The first draft can be regarded as the most important draft. As stated by both Anne Lamott and George Dila, the first draft is the foundation of the writing peace that is being created. In this scenario it would me by Personal Narrative. My writing process in the past seemed to be a little more rushed due to my time management at the time. Going into this, I plan to be more open with my writing just trying to write any thought in my mind even if it makes sense or not, because I can always edit and improve on it with peer and self-review. Having that foundation will help when working on a final draft and hopefully I can test that with my Personal Narrative. Also in my past, what worked for me was to just write what I thought was correct and not review it a good number of times. This would result in an unorganized and unclear writing piece. Something that would cause me the most difficulty when writing drafts would be having the time and actually putting in the effort to write multiple drafts, this is something that I will be working on and have been working on.

Mother Lounge – Amy Tan

The relationship between language and identity is interesting, identity isn’t your language but language is part of your identity. It’s part of the culture you inherit. The term “mother tongue portrays how the mother uses her vocals to share her thoughts, feelings and to conversate with her daughter. Amy uses this as her title because many other parents of first-generation children have similar experiences to her mother. There were some moments where this essay stood out to me. One being the summary of the text, an immigrant mother who tries to speak English as best she can to live an everyday American life. Amy has to try her best to translate or speak for her because many people would not be able to understand or assist her when requested. When the mother got into conflict with someone regarding her financials or health, she would not be able to speak out her frustration without the receiver not being able to understand. Whilst Amy assists and is able to help solve the problem with the English, she was able to learn throughout her life. This can relate to my life because of my father being a Colombian immigrant, his main language is Spanish. He can speak some English due to the fact he has been living in America for about 30 years. Not all the time though, he is not fluent in English by any means, which is normal, I would assist him whenever I can. While my mother is more fluent in English than with Spanish, but can speak both really well. Being in New York could make it easier for such scenarios because it is such a diverse state and within the city many people come from different places in the World with many languages.

The First Day – Edward P. Jones

In the reading “The First Day” by Edward P. Jones, the mother is a figure very similar to my own mother. Very caring about each milestone, which this would be the first day of school. Looking good and ready to begin a new chapter in life, both in my life and the daughter’s life in the text. The mothers would always be trying to get their kids to look near perfect and ready. With me commuting to a school that is in another borough, my mom would be anxious a bit which is normal. For the other mother, she would rather refer her daughter to be at school within the same area of her church. This shows that getting a good or better education compared to other places can be for the better. For the daughter, during the entire time with her mom at the schools, she was very aware of the reactions her mom was giving, which was pretty impressive for a 5-year-old. The mother of the daughter wasn’t the most skilled within reading and writing, so her kids would have to make an extra effort to help her mom understand what she’s doing.

Julian Duran’s introductory Post

To begin, my name is Julian Duran. Born and raised in Queens with a Colombian and Ecuadorian background. I stand proud with my background and keep it with pride. I view myself as relaxed and respectful in which some of my peers can vouch for me. I try to be outgoing but sometimes I will hesitate making me lose the opportunity I will regret in the future. I like to participate in sports by watching and playing casually with my friends that I know got my back. Some of the sports that I like to watch or play would be Soccer, Baseball and American Football. The sport that I would identify myself with would be soccer, I’ve watched and played soccer for most of my life and it is something my dad used to play and I would occasionally bond with him watching soccer. Something else I would like to do on my free time is to play videogames as well as listen to music while I play. It helps me distract myself and just have fun, although I won’t be able to play as much now compared to a couple of months ago due to the start of college. In High School, I went to the World Journalism Preparatory School in Bayside, New York. I have had interesting and lack lustering experiences during my four years here. I guess it helped me to where I am today. Family is also a big factor that helped me get to where I am today, I can always ask for their experiences and advice when I’m starting a new chapter in my life, especially for college. They will always support me and have been from the beginning. I will appreciate that. For college at Baruch, I will be a major economics for the time being and might decide to switch majors if I need to and done enough research down the line. I hope I can build many new experiences, making it a memorable and informative time here where I can take a big step into my future career that I will pursue. From what I have already experienced, the campus is very nice and its only just the start for me. I chose this photo because I like where I started from compared to where I am now, as well as the bear. I still have it.
