Representation
I feel represented with this artist because she has incorporated both cultures into her music. she fused both her American and Latino sides into Reggaeton / latin trap. for me i relate a lot to her cause i really appreciate her representing and acknowledging that there is a whole generation that is bilingual and speaks spanglish.
Recommendation Round Up – Criminal Minds
I’m recommending my favorite show of all time, Criminal minds. This show is 15 seasons long and is about this special FBI team called the behavioral analysis unit (BAU), the tackles various cases and you truly learn many tips and tricks that you can use in your life. In my opinion, it’s the best show because it teaches you a very useful skill, how to read body language to the point that they can identify you and retrace all your steps just through your behavior. It’s very psychological and if you like FBI shows then this is perfect. Oh but warning, it can get pretty gory so if you don’t like blood or violent scenes then be careful while watching it. But if you’re like me who enjoys that then you will be perfectly fine. They investigate all types of crimes, from serial killers to rapist, to con artist and many more. I tend to watch shows that have to do with reading people and well … crime Like “Lie to me”, “Mind Hunters” (Also great shows that talk about body language) but I just enjoy finding out the why and how these criminals do what they do. I binged watched this show in 3 months (including all of the spin-off shows that it has) and by the end of it, I became a profiler as well, reading everyone around me, seeing the small details that everyone does. Each character also presents their own types of skills like my favorite FBI agent, Dr. Spencer Reid. the smartest and youngest member of the FBI. He’s literally a walking google, knows everything and anything, the fastest reader like he’s amazing. Then there is Agent Emily Prentiss who is a literal badass. She is very resourceful, has connections with Interpol, speaks many languages, tends to go undercover a lot so she can easily play any role that she needs to. And then there’s one agent who was there briefly who I think put a big importance on writing, Agent Alex Blake who is an FBI linguistic expert and on the side is also a professor. She truly teaches you to look closely at word choice, and how by reading closely you can identify a lot about the writer. When i was watching the show i felt identified with all of the characters, in many ways i felt like i saw the many parts of me in different individual characters. I liked how they all used their own skills to help each other solve these crimes. If you are interested in watching this show seasons 1 – 12 are up on Netflix. 13 – 15 is on Hulu, annoying how they split the seasons on different platforms but it is very worth it. If I had the time I would re-watch all 15 seasons again and again. 10/10 experience.
Mothers Tongue -Amy Tan
The term “mother tongue” is used in reference to how her mother speaks English. Some may consider her English to be broken, but to Tan, it seems perfectly fine. I think her mother speaks in the order of how the words are supposed to go in when she speaks in Chinese. For example, in Spanish, if you were to say cold water, you say water first, and then its adjective, cold. It’s something I’ve experienced with my own mother as well. Her native tongue is Spanish. She often comes to me asking the correct way to use a particular word or how to say certain words and how to use them. I relate to many things that were said in this essay because my mom doesn’t speak good English either. I tend to do many things for my mom because of how limited her English is, but I can’t relate to the text to being ashamed of my mom for her limited English. I could never be ashamed of her not expressing herself perfectly in a language she didn’t grow up learning. I think Tan uses mothers tongue as her title is. After all, this essay is just describing the difficulties of her mother’s limited English yet. Tan understands her mother. It also makes her reflect on how there is a whole generation of first-gen Asian Americans who don’t do well in English. Because what they practice with their parents can be either a mix of English with their native tongue or simply “broken English” because it’s beneficial for their parents to practice it.
First day – Edward P. Jones
When reading “the first day,” at first, I simply thought it was just going to talk about the importance of the first impression because it was talking about the narrator’s clothing. As I continued to read, I saw how it’s actually about how the narrator is witnessing her mother give her the opportunity to get an education that she never had. Her mother doesn’t want the narrator to struggle like she did because now she has the resources to educate her daughter for her to learn those skills. Now this is the part i find the most interesting. the narrator notices behavior in her mother that she’s never seen before. Her mother asking for help. To me this could be because she was too embarrassed to ask for help in the past, maybe to avoid judgement from other people. But since she has lived a life not knowing how to read or write, she now knows what her daughter does need in order to succeed in the world and is only trying to give her a good education.
Michelle Estrada’s Introduction post
Hey everybody! My name is Michelle. My pronouns are she/her. I never really know what I should talk about, but I guess we start with a bit of background. I’m Latina, Peruvian and Ecuadorian, to be exact. If you look at me, I probably don’t even look Hispanic till I start talking, and then you’ll notice it. Born and raised here in new york, that also tends to surprise Hispanic people because when I speak Spanish, I sound like I’m a native, which is a great compliment for me. Fun fact: I mainly listen to music in Spanish because, in my opinion, it sounds better and the words flow better in Spanish, so I got a tiny idea of who are the current American artists are. Another thing is that people like to say I’m like pandora’s box. You just never know what to expect from me. I take an interest in a lot of things, I’m passionate about a lot of stuff too, and in all honesty, I’m simply just curious about everything, which makes me want to know about everything, even if it’s a strange question I must google it and find an answer because like I always say its better to know more than you should instead of nothing at all. Something else about me is that I like to say I’m old school with a modern twist. I’ve taken a lot of what my parents have taught me from their generation and have applied it to now, and honestly, it’s the most helpful skill because I know how to deal with most ages, except for the newer generation. They scare me and make me feel old, so I try not to deal with them. It just blows my mind the things they do or say. And well, that’s a bit of me. There’s a lot more than you will probably learn about me throughout the semester, so be prepare. I’m excited about this class because I genuinely enjoy writing in my spare time, so this is very fun for me. I can’t wait to learn new skills in this class.
