Karanjot Singh’s Recommendation Post
So the show that I recommend to everyone is The Flash. Honestly it’s one of my favorite shows since I was like 11 when the show first came out. I first started watching it cuz my brother put me on during da summer of 2013. And I don’t know why but the show has had me hooked ever since. Actually the reason that the show has had me hooked for this long is the unrealistic aspect in the show. Like the guy in the show runs Mach three which is humanely impossible to run at and shouldn’t be possible. Also people in the the show have other superpowers that you wish you had. I believe the show has something to it that’s just physically pleasing to the viewers eye. The show also has emotional values that display some realistic values to the show also. The different seasons has different characters that pose the villain of that arc of the show. So for example, the first season is all about the reverse flash who is supposed to be the greatest villain of the flash throughout time. The second season shows a new element of different universes and introduces the villain Zoom who is much faster than The Flash. But throughout struggles and losing to Zoom several times, he finally gets faster than Zoom. But honestly the show is pretty repetitive cuz it keeps introducing new villains that he isn’t stronger or faster than and has to find a new way to beat them. After Season 3, I believe the show took a downfall because it started to introduce villains other than speedsters(people who run fast)which sort of killed the vibe of the show since the very beginning it was introducing the plot that the world was run by people who can run fast, but sometimes those new villains can also be interesting like The Thinker who has a brain that’s so fast that it can out think the The Flash’s next move which is impressive cuz he runs so fast and it should be impossible to see what he is about to do next. It has about 7 seasons in total today and I’m not sure if the show is still continuing any further. But in my opinion, it’s one of the best shows if you want to escape reality and watch something unrealistic. I don’t want to spoil the show for anyone but season 3 happens to have many twists and turns that watcher has to pay attention very carefully. The way the show requires you to pay attention to know what they are talking about is especially grabbing to the watcher. Even today, I can rewatch the Season 3 without getting bored because of how interesting that specific season was. The full show is on Netflix while the show’s newer episodes when it’s being aired usually gets posted on the CW app or TV channel. So I highly recommend you to watch the show The Flash, not only for the cool superpowers, but the emotional values that the show brings about.

Vershawn Young & Jamila Lyiscott Response
After reading Vershawn Young’s Should Writer’s Use They Own English, my initial reaction to the text was the “improper English” that Young was using in his text since he’s trying to make the claim that we should decide on what type of English we want to use. As in Jamilia Lysicott’s 3 ways to speak English, she talks about how she talks in three different languages, one for her native tongue, another for the streets, and the last one is a more formal way of speaking. Both Young and Lysicott speak about talking in a way that they are much more comfortable speaking in and they argue on what even makes it proper English. A takeaway from both texts is language is something you make of it. For example, if someone was raised in a neighborhood where a dialect was used more, you as the listener would adapt to that type of dialect and now you will be speaking in that tone with those same exact people. With their unorthodox forms of viewing the English language, I can connect their forms of text to their content by understanding where someone who would speak in Lysicott’s “trilingual English” is coming from or why Young believes English should be a language that should be expressed in our own way. Lysicott especially grabbed my attention when she mentioned her theory of three languages because as someone who comes from a background that knows how to actually three different languages, so using Lysicott’s theory would I be considered a person that speaks four languages including street slang? I agree with some aspects of both Young and Lysciott because I also believe that we should use a language that we are more comfortable with rather than doing a code switch just to match the person that we may be talking to. Young mentions how speaking in our own English can help reduce prejudice which is something I can agree with because if we were to speak in our own ways and express ourselves thoroughly, then we can help end comments that people make due to the way we may speak and are too afraid to say something.
First Drafting Readings – Karanjot
On my completion of the reading “Rethinking the Shitty First Draft” by George Dila and Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts”, I can start to realize that writing is a process that needs to be developed over time. My own writing process usually consists of doing pretty well research for the first draft so later on, I have to focus on little things that I won’t have to waste time on things that I could’ve finished last time. Tweaking my own process would have something like adding small detail that I would’ve added the first time and is very important to what I am writing. Adjusting your process is especially important because most of the time if you’re too comfortable with one technique, then most likely you will is something you should’ve fixed if you weren’t as comfortable and were paying more attention towards it. Currently, I can try to write a first draft that later requires minimal fixes, so I can stress less about that and focus more on the detail of the story rather than the errors. Most of my difficulties come from using more vocabulary and making my essay sound more appealing to the reader which is something I still am working on.
Amy Tan- Mother Tongue
In the reading of “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, the author explains how living with someone that speaks as she describes it as “fractured” English can be like. To elaborate, she states her mother knew her “limitations of her English as well” since she thoroughly goes over her life experiences on what she had to do for her mother since she couldn’t do it by herself. Such as talking on the phone as she pretends to be her mother. Language can be based on someone’s culture, since more likely than not, people who speak the same language are a part of the same culture. People like to relate their culture to the language they speak because it has ties to their culture. For me, “mother tongue” means the first language that comes from your household or community. The title “Mother Tongue” lends value to the essay because it shows how her mother speaks in her native tongue and how she learned it from being educated in the language. The moment in the essay that stood out to me the most was when Tan states, “because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her.” This can be shocking to the reader since it can spark many thoughts, like why would someone view their mother as less. As someone who also has an immigrant mother who understands very little English, I can relate to Tan’s point of view more profoundly. For example, like Tan, my sister speaks for my mom whenever she has any type of issue on the phone. To conclude, Tan’s essay was very informative explaining her story about her mother’s “broken” but perfect English.
Edward P. Jones, “The First Day”
After reading Edward P. Jones’ “The First Day”, I was surprised to find out that the author mentions that they were ashamed of their mother as seen in the passage where it states “long before I learned to be ashamed of my mother”. This line foreshadowed the passage since the passage states the mother is illiterate and cannot read or write so the author was most likely ashamed by that. The first day of school was important for them since symbolizes a new beginning for them with a new chapter in their life. In the passage it says “Walker-Jones is a larger, newer school and I immediately like it because of that.” This line from the passage shows how the author appreciates better things in their life. A detail that made a strong impression on me was when the mother asked the receptionist to fill out the form for her since she didn’t know how to read or write and my mother was in the same situation when she signed me up for school since no one knew English, so we had to ask around the school office for help to enroll me.
Karanjot’s Introductory post
Hello to anyone reading this! My name is Karanjot and I also can be called Karan(Kuh-run) but only if you can pronounce it properly otherwise Karanjot is fine. The pronouns I go by are he/him. I grew up in Richmond Hill, Queens but we moved to Valley Stream during my sophomore year where I went on to graduate Valley Stream Central High School. I am fully Indian, Punjabi to be specific and I was actually born there. I choose this picture of the respect to respect exchange because everyone in this world needs to learn how to respect one another and the way they are. Ever since I can remember, respect is something my father has enforcing upon me since if you don’t respect someone you will never get it back and sometimes respect can have it’s benefits. Even today I try to respect everyone even if I don’t agree with them since most likely it’s not affecting me or my life. I like going out a lot whether it be the city or somewhere that’s not as crowded. Trying new things has always been a passion of mine since I don’t want my life to be full of regrets because I didn’t go for something. I came to Baruch not only to get my MBA but also since it’s in the city and I get to be in a new environment, due to the fact that I have always been in a school thats in a suburban type of area. I also listening to music since it helps really calm down when I’m really anxious about something or even when I have a task to do because It helps me concentrate much more. I also started going to the gym much more since it really feels like a safe place to me where I can just work out and relieve a majority of my stress. These next 4-6 years hopefully are a great one, not only for me but for all my peers!
