What this article is discussing is the lack of representation of Latinos in the media, in the article it talks about how whoever Latinos are shown in the media they are portrayed as these criminals. “Castro says the lack of accurate representation, especially in Hollywood, means at the very best that Americans don’t get a full understanding of Latinos and their contributions. At worst — especially when Latinos are solely portrayed as drug dealers or criminals — it invites politicians to exploit negative stereotypes for political gain, Castro said.” This is something that needs to be addressed because Latinos are being stereotyped as these drug lords and people only laugh about it and gas the idea up.

Brandon Cruz Introduction

hey my name is Brandon Cruz, I go by he/him pronouns, I am 18 years old my birthday is on May 6, 2004 right after Cinco de Mayo. I always wish my birthday was on Cinco de Mayo since I’m Mexican and it would just be fitting. During my free time I like to watch horror movies and I just like to go out on long walks. Usually every summer I go to Mexico with my family but since I had to go to the seek program this summer I wasn’t able to go, I’m just glad I got experience the college before the fall semester so I’m kind of used to the school by now. I don’t really have anything interesting to say about myself, I have seven piercings and five tattoos and I’m looking to get more in the future. Even though I might have a serious face which I’ve been told by many people I’m just tired and I don’t want to get to talk that much. Whenever I feel frustrated or overwhelmed I just go on very long walk and usually just try to find the nice view and just relax there for a bit or if not I go hang out with my best friend and just hang out. I’m looking forward to this new school year and hopefully build some great connections.

The First Day – BRANDON CRUZ

“The first day” by Edward P Jones is a story about a African-American mom taking her daughter to school for the first time. Throughout the story the daughter becomes progressively more ashamed of her mom, the reason she becomes ashamed is because she’s realizing that her mom is a smart or as fortunate as the other mothers. Not only is the daughter ashamed of her mother, but the mother is also ashamed of her own self. Overall, this is a very sad story. As the mother and daughter are entering the school, the daughter automatically starts pointing out the differences between them and the other families. She describes the other parents like people from the Ebony magazine. What are Ebony magazine is, it’s just a very fancy magazine where people are very well dressed and put together. They are much more fortunate than many of us are and they have money for whatever they want in life. In the text the daughter is describing this lady with hair curlers in her hand, instead of actual curlers they are rolls of money. Now the mother can’t fill out the form by herself so she hast to ask someone for help, she ends up asking the person with the money in her hair. Which might be very uncomfortable for the mom. One thing I might identify with in the story is just not being as fortunate as some of the other students in my school because they got to go in to parent teacher conference with their actual mom. Unfortunately around the age of seven my mother got very sick. Thankfully my older sister got to sort of take my mother’s place and become the person in charge which I am so grateful for. Even though this is a very sad short story, it was a very interesting read.
