Reminder – Bring “Work in Progress” with you to class on Mon. 11/28

Bring whatever work you have done so far on your Analytical Research Paper with you to class, and be prepared to share an informal progress report. You can either print out whatever you’ve done so far and bring a hard copy or come to class with your work available electronically.

By now, your proposal and your preliminary source list should be in your personal ENG2100 folder. Additionally, you should have an outline or some kind of “plan” for your essay, plus notes, and at least the beginnings of a draft.

As you know, your rough drafts are due in class on Wednesday, Nov. 30th. Bring three hard copies with you to class.

Reminder – Research Proposals Due Monday, Nov. 21st

By now, you should have settled on a topic for your Analytical Research Paper and generated a question that will guide your research. Please come to class with your Research Proposal. This could be a paragraph about what you are asking and what you are hoping to learn from your research. It could be a list of your primary question together with “sub-questions” that you have brainstormed. It could be a formal outline. The important thing is that you have written down what you intend to explore in your paper. In addition to bringing the proposal with you to class, please share it with me by placing it in your ENG 2100 folder.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Room Change – Wed. 11/16

On Wednesday, November 16th, we will be meeting in VC 6-155 instead of our regular classroom. Room 6-155 is a Computer Lab. We will spend part of Wednesday’s session working with the online resources of Baruch’s Newman Library. Please help spread the word about this room change to your classmates!

(Sorry for the late notice. I put in a request for a computer lab weeks ago, but it just came through!)

Homework – November 16th

Please post three possible topics for your Analytical Research Paper to the blog. These should be three ideas that you are personally very interested in. Be sure that your topic is sufficiently narrow and that you can explain how the topic fits under the broad category of “Language, Identity, and Representation”. The more specific you can be about what interests you, the more successful your essay will be. Please express your idea in the form of a question. This will give us some sense of what it is that you are interested in exploring about your topic. Your topics must be posted by 12pm on Wed., Nov. 16th

Follow Up to Class – Nov. 14th

If you missed class today, Monday, Nov. 14th, you need to compose and submit a “Dear Reader” letter, reflecting on your experience writing the Textual Analysis Essay. You can link to the instructions HERE. Once you have written your letter, please place it in your ENG2100 folder along with the essay.

If you missed class, you will also want to take a close look at the assignment for your final project, The Analytical Research Paper and Presentation. You can find the assignment above, under the “Essays” tab. Please read the assignment carefully, and use the “comments” section below to either make a comment or ask a question about this assignment. (Only those of you who missed class are required to do this.)

Pay close attention to the due dates included in the assignment. Successful completion of all the steps toward the Analytical Research Paper is required to fulfill this assignment.

Homework for Wednesday, November 9th

  • On Perusall, please read the short chapter titled “Clutter” by William Zinsser. As you read this short essay, think about how you could use Zinsser’s ideas to help you revise your Textual Analysis essays. Each time you find a piece of advice from Zinsser, please highlight it and in your note, express his suggestion in your own words. You can also feel add any other comments that seem like they would be helpful. Please make 3 notes on this essay.
  • Come to class on Wednesday with one hard copy of the most recent version of your Textual Analysis Essay. At this point, your essay should be complete, though still in draft form.

Conferences – Monday, November 7th

On Monday, instead of our regular class, you will be meeting me in your Writing Groups to discuss your Textual Analysis Essays. Our conference schedule is below. We will be meeting in our regular classroom. Please share any new or updated drafts with me by Monday morning, so that I will have read the most recent version of your work and can give you helpful feedback. Because so many of you had unfinished drafts yesterday or had drafts that indicated that you hadn’t quite figured out your focus yet, I strongly recommend that you continue to work on your drafts between now and Monday. Reach out to me via email if you want advice about how to proceed.

If you were not in class on Wednesday and did not submit a draft for the essay, you currently have a “zero” for this major assignment. You cannot write a successful essay for ENG 2100 without going through the drafting and revision process. Remember that it is your responsibility to reach out to me about absences or missing work.

Just posting a reminder that your first drafts of your Textual Analysis Essay are due tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2nd. Please bring three copies of your draft with you to class. No excuses!!!
