Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born on July 27, 1991, and from that moment on, she went through years of abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Her mother was suspected to have a mental disorder called Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where the caretaker of a child makes up fake symptoms or illnesses to make the child look sick. When Gypsy was three months old, Dee Dee claimed she had sleep apnea and took her to the hospital repeatedly, even though she had no signs of having the disorder. Dee Dee went on to make Gypsy believe she had multiple illnesses, including a muscle disease that would make her wheelchair-bound. Dee Dee convinced doctors Gypsy had all these illnesses, causing Gypsy to get many unnecessary surgeries and medications.

As Gypsy got older, it got harder for Dee Dee to control her, and she started to physically abuse her. When Gypsy was around 19 years old, she started meeting people online and making attempts to escape, but they never worked out until she met her online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, in 2012. Around this time, she finally figured out that her mom had been lying to her all her life and that she wasn’t sick like her mom made her believe. So she told her boyfriend everything, and in 2015, she convinced him to kill her mother so that the abuse could end and they could be together. In June of that year, Nicholas stabbed Dee Dee in her sleep 17 times while Gypsy was in the bathroom, covering her ears. They weren’t that good at hiding the fact that they killed her mother, so a couple days later they were arrested. In 2016, Gypsy was sentenced to 10 years in prison for second-degree murder, and in 2018, Nicholas was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder.

Tupac Amaru Shakar was one of the greatest rappers of the 90s. He expressed himself through his music in a way that inspired so many people. Unfortunately, on September 7, 1996, he was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He was rushed to the hospital and put in a medically induced coma, but sadly passed away a couple days later, on September 13, 1996.

A couple months before this tragedy, Tupac got into a fight with a member of the South Side Compton Crips gang for attempting to rob a guy named Trevon Lane, a member of the M.O.B. Pirus gang. Tupac was not a part of the Pirus gang but was heavily affiliated with them.

There were many assumptions as to why Tupac was murdered. One of the main reasons authorities thought he was killed was because he attacked a member of the Crips gang, but they were never really sure. They didn’t make an arrest until September 29, 2023, almost thirty years later. A man by the name of Duane Keith Davis, a former member of the Crips gang, was found to have a connection to Tupac’s murder after many years of him saying that he was at the scene of the murder. He was charged with first-degree murder and will most likely be in prison for more than 20 years.

Hey, my name is Yasmarlin Morel (pronounced Yas-mar-leen). I don’t really have any nicknames, so just call me by my name. My birthday is on September 6 and I use she/her pronouns. I’m majoring in Real estate. I was born and raised in The Bronx, and I have never lived anywhere else. Both of my parents were born in the Dominican Republic and they moved to this city to give me and my older sister a better life. I have 8 birds! I know that’s crazy, and if anyone is asking, no, they don’t make any noise at night. In my free time I love to crochet, read, or listen to music. My favorite artists at the moment are Brent Faiyaz, Lauryn Hill, and Jhene Aiko. Whenever I meet someone new, I’m pretty shy, but once I get comfortable, I’m outgoing. I’m excited to get to know you all this semester:)

Here is a picture of one of my parrots. His name is Coco.
