Please share three possible ideas for your Analytical Research Paper. Your topic should be a problem that you have observed in one of the communities in which you are a member or stakeholder. Be sure to choose problems that you genuinely care about and feel motivated to research.

    1. Chosen topic: Ethical change: Cruelty-Free Practices in the Cosmetics Industry
      I want to talk about the issues in animal testing and decided to specifically talk about the cosmetics industry. As a consumer in the cosmetic industry, many people don’t know what regulations the makeup production follows. I am hoping to learn how the cosmetics industry can shift to a cruelty-free practice and how it even started.

      1. Lisbeth – Remember that this assignment is asking you to identify a PROBLEM in a community that you are a part of and to think about what has caused this problem and how it could be addressed. It’s hard for me to see how cruelty-free cosmetics responds to that prompt.

    1. The topic that I have settled on is the effect of Alcohol, Drugs, Smoking, and Substance abuse on college aged students. I have refined or modified my topic by making it more specific. I am hoping to learn about how this topic is playing a part in everybody’s lives.

    1. Interconnectedness and the effects of a global monoculture. Globalization has made our biological needs very affordable but has diminished the intellectual diversity of humanity and led to a global interconnected monoculture. In this paper I will outline the causes of our current interconnectedness and the effects of the global cultural homogeneity. Specifically, I plan to focus on the global function of American popular culture, the consequences of the rise of intellectual interview podcasts, echo-chambers, giving you exactly what you want, and McDonald’s in China.

      1. Hi Yasmarlin, I think this is an interesting and important topic. I would start your exploration by trying to come to a clear understanding of what systemic racism is. Because that terms refers to the ways in which particular systems function in a discriminatory way, you may find that you want to focus on a particular area of NYC’s “systems” – like education or housing, for example, rather than trying to tackle systemic racism in all its various manifestations in NYC.

      1. Sarahy – Sounds good. You will want to start by defining food insecurity and then explaining what you mean when you say that food insecurity is a problem in NYC. What causes it? And what would solve the problem?

      1. Hi Leilani, This is an example of a topic that seems possibly TOO NARROW! I would suggest broadening your focus by researching Social Anxiety Disorder in college students or in young adults. I assume that most of what you would find would be applicable to Business students in particular!

    1. The Topic i have settled on is Colorism in Dominican Republic. I changed it from racial discrimination to colorism because that’s what i meant to talk about. I am mainly hoping to learn why a lot of dominicans are colorist to even their own skin complexions and how does this colorism affect dominicans.

      1. Hi Sahir, I think this is an important and interesting topic. As you research, you may find that you are more successful finding sources by looking for sources about colorism in the Caribbean more broadly, rather than looking exclusively for sources that focus on the DR.

    1. I have decided that I am going to modifying my topic to gentrification specifically in Washington Heights (Upper manhattan). The question I am trying to answer in my research paper is: How is gentrification affecting the redevelopment of Washington Heights. Im going to try to focus on the negatives/positives of the redevelopment of nicer and more modern looking shops, buildings, etc.

      1. Hi Garelys, I like the idea that you are focusing on your own neighborhood. Think about non-traditional sources that you might use for your research, like interviews with community members, neighborhood associations, social media that focuses on Washington Heights, etc…. And remember that your own observations can be part of your research, so pay attention to what you yourself have observed in your neighborhood!

    2) Oldest Daughter: How does being an older daughter in a Hispanic household create future mental issues as they grow up?
    3) Latina: How does the sexualization of Latinas effect the way society and media see them?

      1. Isabel, I like this topic because it is clearly so personal for you. When you start your research, you may find that, in addition to looking for sources that address the specific challenges faced by Latina oldest daughters, you have to broaden your search and look for research that discusses the burdens placed on oldest daughters in general.

      1. Hi Ryan, “Crime in NY” is way too broad. Be much more specific about the problem you have observed. Are you thinking about a particular kind of crime? Or crime in a particular area? What do you want to understand more deeply?

    1. I chose not to settle on any of the topics I brainstormed before. I have chosen a new one which is, the factors that lead young black and brown men into crime as a source of income.

      1. Angelina, I know we spoke about this last week. Are you thinking here specifically about young men getting involved with selling drugs, or do you have some other kind of criminal activity in mind? Remember that you will want to think about both the causes and possible solutions for this problem.

    1. I chose to settle about talking about the Hispanic community in NYC but on a different topic. This being about the education system and how inequalities target Hispanic communities within in the educational system.

      1. Rogelio, This sounds good, but still needs to be narrowed or clarified. “The education system” is a giant field. Are you thinking about higher education? Are you thinking about early education? Where do you see inequalities that affect Latinos specifically? Let’s try to flesh this out a little before you start doing your research.

    1. Chosen Question: How does being a biracial young adult affect one’s idea of their identity? I modified my question on the loneliness of biracial individuals. I hoping to learn how other biracial young adults experience their identity, if they go through the same experiences of doubting who they are or feel left out or if they feel comfortable within themselves from the get go.

      1. Hi Kaitlyn, I think this will be an interesting and rewarding topic for you to explore. Think about how you might include non-traditional sources (like interviews or social media posts, for example) in your research.

    1. For my topic, I am writing about is drug induced eating disorder. I chose this topic because not a lot of people talk about it and I have had personal experiences as a child having eating disorder while taking medications; I have also witnessed some family that has had worse scenarios in this disorder. i hope to learn how it became an issue and the treatments available for other people in need.

      1. Alyssa, Are you thinking about the Asian-American community here in NYC? Do you have something specific in mind in terms of what you yourself have heard about or experienced over the last few years?
