ICE Police Raids

Due to new immigration laws, ICE police officers have been desperately trying to arrest illegal immigrants. The problem with their tactics is that they are violating laws by entering into the homes of immigrants without a search warrant. They have been lying to people in order to let them into their houses. This has led to the arrest of immigrants that are just working to better the condition of their family. Instead of trying to to catch criminals, they are out to get regular families. This situation has created fear within the immigrant community. A lot of families are now scared to get out of their homes. Many do not send their children to school. They know they are targeted, so a lie regarding their deportation is easily believable. ICE police have been using this to their advantage. They continue to arrest people and separate families. A lot of immigrant families now face deportation. They do not know what to do since a lot of them have children who were born in the United States. Many do not have the resources in their home countries that they need in order to support their children. On top of that, they do not know who to leave their children with once they are deported. These searches are a violation to the Fourth Amendment,  but it seems that they have been using these tactics for a very long time and have gotten away with it.

Final Project Ideas

Siblings and Psychological Displacement

The relationship between parent is child is drastically changes when the child has to welcome a new sibling into the family. Children need to adapt to the new environment that the sibling brings to the family. How does the integration of a new member into the family lead to displacement in a child’s behavior? How does the feeling of displacement affect the overall family connection?

Trump’s Immigration Policy

Trumps’s immigration policy has had a big affect on how much illegal immigrants step out of their homes. They no longer feel protected in places they used to feel comfortable in. A lot of people are taking drastic measures in order to not be seen. How has Trump’s immigration policy been a leading factor in the displacement of illegal immigrants?

Adoption

Children in the foster care system are always getting exposed to new environments. Many of them move from home to home because they are never comfortable with the people who have adopted them.  Constant changes in homes leads to a lot of behavioral problems, and the feeling of lifelong displacement. How does the adoption process and post adoption lead to displacement for both the child and the parents?  How does the displacement of being in different homes affect the connection between the parents and the child ?

The Martian

The Martian is about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars after his crew thinks he is dead. While on a mission,  Mark and his crew encounter a storm that separates them. On their way back to Earth, they find out that he is alive. Mark assimilated to the environment in Mars by using his knowledge of science to help him survive. The next mission to Mars was not for another four years, so he spends his time trying to communicate with them. While in Mars, he extends his food supply by growing potatoes in a planet where nothing grows.  He experiences storms, extremely cold weather and constant failures in his attempts as a botanist. He uses satellites to write to NASA and is successful. Although his chances of survival are minimal, he puts his thinking cap on and convinces them of is plan.  They return to Mars and rescue him. Mark overcomes his displacement and goes back to Earth.

How to Read a Sonnet

How To Read a Sonnet was a very interesting experience. I learned that although sonnet’s are small in size, they are very complex. It took us almost two hours to break down what Shakespeare really meant in Sonnet 20. We went back and forth on whether he was talking about a woman or a man. We found out that it was a combination of both a man and a women whom Shakespeare was really attracted to. I learned about the basics of a sonnet. A sonnet literally means “little sound”. It contains a hidden story which the reader tries to find the meaning of. Sonnets are roughly all the same size. They have fourteen lines with ten syllables in each line. They are usually about love and romance and come in groups which we call a sonnet sequence. Another important aspect sonnets is that they are addressed to one person. Sonnets are like detective work where the reader tries to find out the meaning through sounds and the vocabulary used. What I appreciated the most about this workshop is how passionate the instructor was about the poem and finding out what it was about. It kept me engaged and focused on the hidden meanings in Shakespeare’s language.

Displaced In a Matter of Seconds

Saturday was my day of displacement. I say this because there were changes to my usual schedule that I am not normally used to. Unlike every good New Yorker, I forgot to check for planned service changes on the 4 train. It turns out that during weekends 4 trains are not running between 149st Grand Concourse and Woodlawn. When I was on my way to the train station, I find a “No trains at this station” sign. I panicked and completely forgot the address of my destination, and how to use Google Maps.  After about 5 minutes of looking for an alternate route, and 15 minutes of waiting for the bus, I was finally on my way to work. I got there late and had to explain an issue that I should have planned ahead for. On top of that, on my way home I missed my stop because I was too distracted on my phone. When I looked up, I had no idea where the bus was taking me. I tried to remain calm because I did not want to look nervous in front of the people on the bus. Instead of asking for directions, I stood quiet and waited until the last stop. Simply enough I waited for the bus back. The biggest take back that I have from these two experiences is that in a matter of seconds you can go from a situation or place is that completely familiar, to one that is not. My mind went blank and my solution was remaining calm, or at least convincing myself and others that I was. Both of these events could have been completely preventable if I was more attentive.  A second of displacement can throw your whole day off track. Thankfully, there is technology to help us get back on track when we find ourselves completely displaced.
