Travel Ban- Japanese American Executive Order 9066

Yesterday the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard the arguments for and against the Travel Ban. In these arguments, the executive order against Japanese American during WWII was mentioned. For this blog I want to talk about the displacement that Japanese Americans went through.  About 110,000 Japanese Americans were displaced in this time period. They were forced to move to the western side of America, leaving behind their homes and friends. During WWII, Japanese were separated from the rest of society and were forced to live in interment  camps.  Additionally only American-born Japanese were allowed to hold positions of authority causing conflict between the Japanese.  The Japanese culture involves a lot of pride. When the children of Japanese Americans held positions of authority, their parents were deprived from respect. As a result of this displacement in roles 5,589 American born Japanese renounced their American citizenship.

Displacement in Syria

As everybody knows, Syrian citizens are going through a rough time.  Since March 15, 2011 Syria has been fighting a civil war; it began from a peaceful protest. The Syrian government repressed these protest aggressively and the citizens counterattacked. Violence in Syria has escalated ever since and has cost many innocent lives. The displacement that takes place here, is that millions of Syrians have evacuated their homes in the hope of finding a safe place to live. It is also estimated that “five million Syrians have had to leave the country”, this according to the United Nations. Additionally, six million more people have moved in search for a safer place inside Syria. That is about eleven million Syrians who have had to leave their towns and everything that’s familiar to them in order to remain alive. They must adapt to their new lives, where they must to start from scratch. Many have lost family members and find it challenging to move on without them. These people were forced to migrate to foreign lands in order to survive.

The Princess Diaries

In The Princess Diaries, Mia an average girl from San Francisco discovers that her father was the Prince of Genovia and she is heir to the throne.  Her grandmother makes her take classes on manners and how a princess should act. This is all a surprise for Mia, who needs to adapt to her new role.  This movie relates to The Fresh Prince because he also experiences a difference in socioeconomic class. The Princess Diaries relates to the Superman and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in that they must adapt to their surroundings. They must learn how to act in front of the others.  Mia is a character who  wasn’t popular in school but when her classmates find out she becomes the center of attention.  Additionally, Mia undergoes a makeover which basically changes her exterior look and becomes more princess like.  Her biggest conflict is not knowing if she should accept becoming a Princess and accept the new responsibilities this comes with.

ART-A-THON Reflection

I attended the Playing the Blues event. This was a very fun and teachable experience. Although I had background knowledge in music, I had never played a song in the genre of the blues. I was a bit frighten when I went in because the room was very small and crowded with people which I didn’t know. The moment I went inside, Professor Anderson told me to try playing the piano. I was so nervous to try because of the other people who were there. Exactly at that moment, however students from my English class arrived and the other students which I didn’t know left because of the tight space. That made me feel more relaxed and started to feel happy about trying something new. The professor was very patient and helpful throughout the session. She taught us techniques and numberings. I would truly recommend it, this experience helped me realized how college doesn’t only have to be about books but fun as well. The style of the music also changed my mood. The music was so jumpy and happy that I began to enjoy my day in school. I was only able to attend for an hour but learned a lot about the style. When I got home I was eager to practice what I had learned. Additionally, I discovered that there are rooms available for students at Baruch to go and practice the piano. I believed this school didn’t have any music rooms but it does and became surprised to discover that. Furthermore, I learned different techniques to the blues. I loved that the teacher was full of energy and passion for this session. One could know this when she began to sing on top of the music. Although she knew we didn’t know much she was still willing to work with us. She wasn’t annoyed that we couldn’t get things right but was delighted that we were trying our best. What I liked the most about this session was the hands-on experience. It wasn’t a lecture and a teacher speaking but the student playing and learning from his/her mistakes and taking action while learning. I believe that there should be more courses in school with this type of experience. I would love to attend one of these events next year if I could.
