Final Project Ideas

  1. Reverse Culture Shock (U.S.A)
    • Living abroad for a while and returning to the U.S.A is a harder experience than people think. It can have some serious impact on people psychologically, socially and physically. How does one cope with returning the Trump’s America after living away for an extended period? How has the foreign experience shaped the way the person knows experiences American life? What does it feel like to be the outsider in your actual home? (P.S: choosing between a military personnel’s return or a civilian’s return)
  2. Minorities in Corporate America
    • Things like the glass ceiling and social mobility are all results of the hierarchy in Corporate America, and it is no secret that being a minority has its impacts on how well you do or how far you get in this industry. With this fact, many minorities may feel displaced in their work place or even in the process of getting into the workplace. How do minorities approach issues such as discrimination and feelings of misrepresentation in corporate America outside of the legal measures? What makes them continue to pursue these careers despite the challenges they may face (outside of monetary gains)?
  3. Scholarship Students in “snobby schools”
    • Lots of good things happen for students who are smart. In some special cases, some of these students are even able to get into prestigious schools because of the hard work they put into their studies. There are some students, though, who get into prestigious schools because they can afford it, or their families have a legacy that must be continued. How do these “scholarship students” deal with the class culture change when attending these rich kid schools? How does it affect their character?

Siblings and Psychological Displacement

How does the feeling of displacement affect the overall family connection?

Trump’s Immigration Policy

Trumps’s immigration policy has had a big affect on how much illegal immigrants step out of their homes. They no longer feel protected in places they used to feel comfortable in. A lot of people are taking drastic measures in order to not be seen. How has Trump’s immigration policy been a leading factor in the displacement of illegal immigrants?

Adoption

Children in the foster care system are always getting exposed to new environments. Many of them move from home to home because they are never comfortable with the people who have adopted them.  Constant changes in homes leads to a lot of behavioral problems, and the feeling of lifelong displacement. How does the adoption process and post adoption lead to displacement for both the child and the parents?  How does the displacement of being in different homes affect the connection between the parents and the child ?

Final Project Ideas

Nursing Homes (the elderly and displacement)

A couple of years ago I wanted to be in the medical field, and I actually ended up doing a three year internship in a nursing home. It was a very eye opening experience that I owe a lot of growth to. It required patience, and  emotional strength. Patience because many patients there are battling against mental disorders, some are very sick, and some are depressed. In the three years that I was there one characteristic that I say can describe most of the patients is Sad. That is where you need that emotional strength and stability. The hardest thing to see is an elderly be at the nursing home against their will, or an elderly start crying because they have nobody to visit them or sometimes they do and they just don’t come or call.

-What can the nursing facilities do to make the place feel more like home? (If it feels more like home the elderly would feel like they belong there)

Homelessness

I have had friends who were homeless, and it was difficult seeing them struggle the way they were. One of my close friends went from having a home to almost being in the streets. It affected her school work, and her social life. She was pressured into getting a job, and having to drop out of school to work full time. Having to step into adult mode to help her mother while having 5 younger siblings was difficult for her.

  1. How does the displacement of not having a home affect the younger population? What are some of the outcomes that come along with homelessness and the feeling of not having a place to call home?

Adoption

Adoption is always a soft spot for everyone because it involves kids who are placed under situations that they have no control over. Many are lucky enough to have homes and a family and then they are others who unfortunately don’t. I would love to adopt some kids in the future. And because I don’t know much about the topic researching will give me some idea on how many kids are in the adoption centers, maybe research how many kids are being adopted, etc. The research question here can be

1.How does the feeling of displacement for the kids at the adoption center affect their decisions as they grow up?
