Hairspray

This a clip from the movie Hairspray. In this clip Seaweed (the black guy with the waves) is singing about what life is like for black person in Baltimore during the civil rights movement. It doesn’t seem like he wants to assimilate into white culture, but more of being comfortable and not having to deal with the constant stereotypes and stigmas that are associated with black people of the time. He is basically using this song to tell Tracy, Penny and Link to inform the other “white folk” that black people are not that bad, but even if the whites don’t get it, they will still be doing their own thing amongst themselves.

Hayate the Combat Butler is a Taiwanese TV show that is about a protagonist, Hayate, who is broke and in debt because of the debt his parents accumulated while gambling (156.8 million yen or 1.4 million us dollars or 42.9 million New Taiwan Dollar). The big debt causes Hayate to start doing many part time jobs because he wants to help his parents by attempting to pay off their debt. When he runs out of time, to pay off the debt, he considers robbing a rich person, but instead decides to protect them when someone else tried to harm them. In return, the rich person gave him a job as a butler and pays off his debt. Hayate was in a new and unfamiliar place. He had to adjust from his daily civilian life to his new life as a butler for an extremely rich person. Hayate had to improve his house skills to get approval from his master and he had to improve his combat skills to get approval from other butlers. Displacement Article

Hello everyone,

While looking online for some articles I stumbled upon this interesting article. It speaks of the struggles that a teen went through because she was an immigrant. She felt displaced in school and other social situations. Jessica, an immigrant from Mexico, also describes how she would try to fit in. She tried to assimilate into this new culture and environment. Jessica also gave advice to immigrants struggling to find a place in a new culture.  I thought this would be relatable as many of us are immigrants or come from immigrant families. Check it out sometime.

13 Going on 30

In the film 13 Going on 30,  a 13 year old girl name Jenna Rink wakes up one day as a 30 year old because of a wish she made on her 13th birthday after the popular girls humiliated her. Since her life fast forwarded and she had no memorable experience of being an adult, her mindset is still of a 13 year old. She is displaced because physically she is an adult, but her mind and soul belonged to a 13 year old. Therefore, she panics when she sees a naked man in her apartment. She assimilates to the adult world as she learns that she works for a magazine company and figures out ways to benefit the company using her unique ideas from her 13 year old mind, such as the idea of a yearbook themed layout for the magazines. She also hangs out with 13 year olds because she feels as if she is one of them. She acts and dresses differently from her co-workers and the adults around her by wearing bright mismatched colors and styling her hair with styles from the past.
