Drinking Coffee Elsewhere

Why did the counselor stop and ask Dina why she said she wanted to be a revolver when she said it clear to understand?

Would they have treated Dina the same if she wasn’t a colored girl and said revolve?

What caused Dina to be a misanthrope and why did she let Heidi in if she did not like people?

  1. 2.) I belive they would have treated her differently if she was not a person of color and said the words, “I’d be a revolver.” However, because she is a person of color, they took her words with a very negative connotation. People most often link both people of color and violence together, and as a result, create an atmosphere of prejudice. In this case, the white boys and even the black guy within this circle, automatically interpreted her words with fear because of the prejudice against balck people and violence. If it had been someone else saying those words who is not a person of color, perhaps they would have thoght automatically that it was a joke and passed it off with a laugh and continued around the circle.

  2. 1) The counselor probably wanted Dina to dig deeper into the real reason she said she wanted to a revolver. Seeing as Dina was answering questions either superficially or lying all together and the counselor knew, they just wanted her to open up to her true feelings instead of hiding them and not confronting them. By asking that question, even if Dina did’t tell, she would at least be thinking about it and confronting the real reason she said it.

  3. 3) What causes Dina to be a misanthrope is the fact that she has never really felt connected to anyone. In her home town she always had to act like something she was not. She had to hide her intelligence and often pretend that things were going in a way that they were not. For this reason she was not fond of interacting with people because it was not something she did not enjoy. Heidi was different from other people in Dina’s eyes. The way in which approached Dina for example, was enough to show Dina that there was something she liked about Heidi. She was odd and pretty much came out of nowhere. They could connect in their own way because that is the impression Heidi left on her. Heidi was not judgmental like the rest of the people there. This allowed Dina to let someone in her life, which is something she did not usually do.
