3. I think Dina choosing to be revolver emphasizes that she likes to being alone. In Dina’s case, a revolver would be used as a “self-defense” gun to either scare or hurt others that get close to her. She becomes awkward in social settings so she stays in the confines of her dorm room. Therefore, Dina’s choice of becoming a revolver gives her an advantage to being distant from people.
2. I think Dina stopped talking to Heidi after she “came out” because she didn’t want to be affiliated with a dyke. When Heidi presented her speech on “Coming Out Day”, she said she liked girls and wanted to sleep with them. This probably agitated Dina in some way and caused her to distance herself from Heidi.
1. I feel as if Dina’s relationship with her parents has damaged her tremendously. She had a pretty close relationship with her mother. Her Dad on the hand was very abusive. Dina hints in the story that her dad was the cause of her mother’s death. This made her distance herself completely from her father. Dina also says that she hates the word “Dad.” Seeing someone that you trust and love do awful things caused Dina to be a loner. She couldn’t let anyone in easily again. Her own father had betrayed her trust so how could she trust a stranger. Dina would struggle to build another solid relationship from this point on.
3) Dina chooses to be a revolver when playing the ice breaker games reveal how she needs to feel in this new environment. I believe she is choosing to be a revolver to show her strength to attack and also reveal about herself that she is on defense all the time. Dina expresses her feelings of being in the new environment since she felt that she did not fit in and she needed to protect herself from all these strangers. Throughout the story, it is clear that Dina likes to be isolated from the rest like she said she doesn’t eat at the Commons, therefore Dina chooses this object to be so she can send the message out that she doesn’t like to be with others, prefers to stay isolated, and will attack if needed as a form of self-protection.
