When I signed up for ENG 2150, I did not realize that music was involved in the course. As an avid music fan, regardless of genre, I got excited when I found out music was involved. English was never my favorite course throughout school just because the material I had to write about or read did not interest me, but this course so far has changed my perspective. I am looking forward to sharing and hearing what people have to say about music, and seeing their work. Music is different to everyone, as everyone has a different ear in what they listen for when hearing a new song. Perspective in music is very interesting and unique and I am excited to learn how people listen to music and learn about new artists. One obstacle I can foresee in doing well in this class is trying to adopt a new ear for artists I might have to write about. Sometimes it takes a lot of time for me to find interest in a new artist. Music is a universal language, and I want artists I don’t enjoy as much to grow on me. As for the instructor, what can help me the most is honest criticism of my writing and work. Not per se my taste in music because everyone’s taste in music is different, but instruct me on how to become a better writer and make sure my work is exceptional in regards to other people’s standards. I want people to understand my work and not feel confused. I believe that many people struggle with having people understand their thoughts and actions, including myself, so I believe guidance in getting my point across in my writing would help me excel. Outside of school, I currently work two jobs that are outside of the norm in terms of a typical college student job. They require a lot of time, but I can balance it with school and my personal life. I look at this class as a way to bond with other people based on music and recommend songs, artists, and/or genres. I feel like music and the arts do not get the attention they deserve throughout schools regardless of major. The arts have been around for thousands of years, and I feel as if they do not get the attention they deserve in a classroom. Everyone appreciates some form of art, whether it’s paintings, music, sculptures, or drawings. Personally, I appreciate music the most but it wasn’t until college that I grew an appreciation for paintings and drawings. Being able to share my thoughts on music is very exciting and I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge on music and excelling in my writing.
