Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter aka Isis tha Survivor has been through situations that no women should have to go through. Majority of us know the saying “you do the crime you do the time”.  Even though the unfair system in America leads to a decent amount of the crimes that happen because of the need to survive and feed, the blame of the crime will still be put on the victim. There are no other variables involved other than the crime that has been committed. Mary going through the orphanage system was not easy as she explained. It was not what she thought it would be and instead of gaining a family she gained no one. Fast forward through her life of not being able to afford brand name schools, she did still attend community college and Penn State (had to drop out) and achieved her education with a 3.7 GPA. The worst thing in my opinion Mary had spoken about was her experience of childbirth during imprisonment. Chained and cuffed to the hospital bed while giving birth is something that i can’t even describe in words. There are no words. Finally having to see her child after 8 months pass by she was able to try again. Her child is her hope and strength. She didn’t want him to live a life she had lived. Having an interest in a male dominated industry was not easy. As you can see by the television incident. Although now we have more women coming to the front line these days, there is still the problem of having women as a sex symbol. This male dominated industry did include women, not for their voice, but for their looks. Many women rappers now talk about money, sex, independence, and many critics judge these topics for whatever reasons. However, men rappers can be praised for speaking on these topics. I think that this is because of the gender role issue we have in this society. One being a woman should have a family and kids and should not be dating multiple men. Another is the excuse society has for men when they are found dating multiple women. That excuse being, he’s a man. That’s what men do, you can’t change that. So for many female artists now and in the past get a lot of criticism when speaking about living their life, drinking, partying, only having money as a priority. Society is what makes things difficult for a woman to step out of the “norm” without judgement. And even I am guilty of that. And maybe you are too even if it’s not intentional. Women in general receive judgement, so just imagine life for a woman of color.
