In this podcast, we listened to the story of Isis the savor; a person that could not be kept down by her circumstance. She explained in her early life that she had to deal with her mothers manic episodes and how she traded evil for evil, the choice of to become a ward of the state or to stay with her mothers abuse. Sadly she suffered from the same fate as many others when entering the system from such a young age, she would go on to be in and out of prison and ultimately delivered her first child; handcuffed in prison. This trauma would go on to push her to provide a good life for her son, she was pushed to develop her talent and pair that with her maturity that she had to acquire at an early age with her intellect and started to rap. She was so good at her craft she was able to rap alongside the likes of meek mill and become recognised in her local scene. Her style resembles other artists like NAS, lyric heavy with a boom bap beat that seems to prioritise telling a story rather than personifying an image. The podcast also brings up the idea that amongst the black community and rapping in general, listeners love a come up story. But in these come up stories it seems to only be around men, but Isis brang the story without needing to rely on her sexappel, unlike many other female rappers.

When I was listening to the podcast I could not help but think about how people hate struggling and how they relate a struggle to darkness, as if darkness was bad. But if darkness was bad why do we close our eyes at night? Why is space filled with blackness, the absence of light? Why does a seed sprout in the ground? When a seed is planted in the ground it’s surrounded by darkness and is plagued with the anxiety of what is above it; the unknown. But the seed will take its time in this darkness to sprout and grow past the darkness, breaking through the top layer of soil and letting its face embrace the warmth of the sun. darkness is not suffering, but instead it is what comes before the light. The struggle that Isis had to experience was the darkness she had to have before having her son. And the warmth that her son has provided to her has made the struggle of growing worth it.

  1. Excellent point made on the topic of darkness and the struggle behind it. I do believe that as humans we need to struggle before we can succeed at something, but we must never quit. There’s a great quote I heard and it goes “everything you’ve ever wanted in life is on the other side of fear”.
