I will admit before this blog post I have never listened to a single John Lennon song and I feel bad admitting that. However, after listening to his music, I realized that many of the older artist’s music that I’ve listened to before my time such as the Eagles, The Beatles, or Elton John share a similar sound. Not because they copied each other’s sound or because they were unoriginal in any aspect but because they all utilize the same type of music technique within their songs you can hear their emotion and visualize a story through their music. More specifically Jazz and the Blues. In these genres of music specifically there a lot of storytelling, just like in John Lennon’s album you can hear the emotion and feel of the actual music.
John Lennon effortlessly implemented his political stances into his music. His music storytelling expressed his personal feelings towards the Topic. The article states “he not only attacked the war — any war — but questioned and confronted the very methods and structures he’d utilized in his attack, thereby pushing rock & roll up against the wall to test limits and demand answers.” He utilized his music for more than just entertainment. He utilized it as a means to speak up against things that he had an issue with or things that he genuinely felt emotional about. This not only worked to boost his career by providing more genuine emotion in his music but also for the publicity of things he was addressing. In a way, this reminds me of the national anthem that Jimi Hendrix covered and how big rock artists were using their talent and passion to bring light to things they felt strongly about.
While watching the John Lennon documentary and thinking about the correlation between him and the K-Pop Stars, the one that stuck out to me was this image of perfection and how it bends in both of their worlds. In the K-pop industry, they are forced and groomed to be perfect. They want to be perfect and show no flaws at all. Even the sound of their music is made sure to be perfect. The same can be said for John Lennon in which he wants to make his music perfect while he’s writing and singing it. However, in his world, he doesn’t strive to be this perfect person and to show no flaw. He just wants to make good music and many people around him want to perceive him as perfect. However, this just pushing him away because he wants people to tell him what he can do better with the music he wants to be imperfect so that he can get better as you can see in the documentary. He moved away to a secluded property away from all the fans and “yes men”.This differs from K-pop because if somebody tells a Kpop group that they’re not perfect they’re going to feel like they failed. Unlike John Lennon who appreciates honest feedback would take it as room to grow.
