The national anthem can be used in many ways sometimes it promotes patriotism and it can also be used to confront national challenges. A way that it can be used to promote patriotism is because this song represents many things like the freedom that America achieved  and this song is played many times to show support to the country. But another way this song can be used is to confront national challenges that concern everyone and Jimi Hendrix does this. Many times when someone thinks of the national anthem, someone is singing the song in a beautiful tone on a stage or for a special event and in many sports before the game is played a male or female singer will come out and sing this to show support for the nation that they are playing under and for. This was altered during Hendrix Woodstock performance because during this performance no one uses their voice to sing the national anthem. His Guitar is the one that does the singing by switching between many keys and chords. This performance is not your traditional way and that is way many people found it transgressive. A lot of people are use to and have a habitat of hearing the national anthem sung and when there is something new and different many people have a hard time liking it at first. This always happens not just in this case many people will struggle to like something at first because it is not in there comfort zone or because its just different from  what they are use to doing and in this case they are not use to a guitar doing the national anthem alone and probably were expecting someone to sing. This performance as well is showing patriotism it also challenged the nation because during this performance  he added a few things into the anthem. You can hear him play sounds that represent gunshots and bombings and he does this to bring awareness to issues happening in the nation. During the year of this performance the Vietnam war was still a major issue in the nation and his guitar skills gave him the authority to speak through the music. Despite not saying a single word the message was very loud and clear because he did this by making distinct sounds with his guitar and if you listen closely you can hear the problems he is trying to help.
