I think music in general has so much power to speak about problems and many artists have spoken about subjugation and many other problems.  The reason is because many people listen to music and if a song is catchy and has some good lyrics its more likely to be heard then the news or some politics. Music has a more reach to the public and it can also be global and can affect many people than just whoever is living here. A song that spoke about subjugation was Jay-Z in his 99 problems song. A scene in the video is of this cop pulling them over and he asks him why he thinks he was pulled over. He responded with “Cause I’m Young and I’m black and cause my hat is real low”. One of the issues he is addressing is that many times the police will stop black people or people of color just to mess with you or to try and find anything  on you that they can write you up about and in the scene he is depicting this. The cop also tried to be slick thinking he wouldn’t know his rights  by asking him if he could search the car and this is probably another reason why he stopped him he might have thought he can get away with a few things. Another song that talked about subjugation was The Bigger Picture by Lil Baby and in the song he talks about  some of the same issues and how cops many times will mistreat people of color and people have died because of it. And this has gone on for many years there are hundreds of songs that have been played over so many years apart and will still talk about the same issues. During the reading it was interesting to see what some people thought about the performance of Rene Marie. There was many mixed feelings and a lot of people said it was disrespectful and there is only one national anthem. But I think that the flag means many things and it represents different things  to different people and cultures. In the article it explains how African Americans saw this flag as places that they could not enter. So this song was a way for them to find comfort and the lyrics meant a lot to them because they can relate to them in every way because it was based on the situation that they are in.
