Hamlet act 4
Last week 15

Claudius calls Gertrude in to ask him what is going on. She announces to him that hamlet killed Polonius and Claudius realizes he could’ve been killed too. Now he wants his men to find hamlet and see where’s the dead body. Hamlet tells the king that the body is up the stairs. The king then orders him to go to England. The king tells England to make sure to kill hamlet. The people get mad at Claudius for covering up Polonius death and hamlets actions and want to overthrow him and put Laertes in charge instead. Claudius tells Laertes that he almost got killed too and he’s on his side and against hamlet.
Hamlet sends Horatio a letter discussing his recent events and how hamlet was attacked by pirates. He tells him to come back with his messengers to him because he needs his help. Claudius an Laertes plan to kill hamlet. Their plan is to have a battle between hamlet and Laertes and Laertes will kill hamlet. Claudius also prepares a plan B that he will give Hamlet a cup of poisoned water during the battle. Gertrude walks in and announces that Ophelia was drowning. Laertes gets very upset from this news and Claudius tries to calm him down.

Week 14
Hamlet act 3

Claudius asks 2 people about their observation on Hamlets behavior. They suggest him to come to the play eve though they couldn’t figure out why he’s behaving that way. Hamlet enters the play and sees Ophelia and in the play he tells her to go and be a nun and commit lust there. He then leaves the play. King decides that he needs to send Hamlet away due to his behavior and doesn’t think it’s because of Ophelia. Polonius says to have a play and Claudius agrees. Hamlet prepares his group. The show is about murder.
Hamlet erupted after the play and verified now that the ghost information was accurate. Hamlets parents get mad at his actions and he promises that he will be cruel to his mother but won’t hurt her. Claudius sends out the envelope requesting hamlet to move to England. Hamlet comes behind Claudius to try and kill him but realizes that he’s praying and doesn’t want to kill him now because he’ll go straight to heaven. So he decides to do it another time. He comes to his mother and their both yelling and then Hamlet kills Polonius and the ghost appears to hamlet and tells him to stop causing pain and suffering to his mother. He tells her she should repent and that he’ll go to England. He then leaves with Polonius dead body.

Hamlet act 2

Polonius is speaking to one of his servants (Reynaldo) about his own son Laertes. He wants Reynaldo to go out and see if his son is behaving
Himself. Reynaldo has to go to the strangers in Paris and ask about prominent Danes in the city and he isn’t allowed to tell them that he has a special connection or reason to Laertes. Whenever Laertes name is mentioned Reynaldo has to make believe that he doesn’t really know him well and he should make believe that he knows Laertes as being happy and that he gambled and drinks and fights.Now that Reynaldo knows the rules he’s ready to go out and find the answers about Laertes for Polonius. Ophelia tells her father that Hamlet scared her because of how he looked and how he was being rude. She also tells Hamlet that Polonius told her that she can’t stay in touch with Hamlet anymore. Polonius thinks that Hamlet is acting this way because Ophelia isn’t talking to him. Hamlet loves Ophelia and Polonius is eager to go and tell Claudius and Gertrude that now he knows why their own son isn’t behaving. The king wanted to try to figure out why his son has been acting weird so calls in his friends to ask them. Polonius finally arrives to the king and tells him that the reason for his sons horrible behavior is because he’s broken hearted. Two people come in and tell him that the king of Norway heard that Fortinbras is planning to invade Denmark. They told Fortinbras not to do it and awarded him for listening. Claudius then asks if Polonius has any proof for his brave discovery and so he tells him to come see for himself. He tells them to come and hide and watch Hamlet from afar. Polonius goes to Hamlet to ask him questions but he’s avoiding it. Then hamlets two friends show up and now Hamlet questions their visit. He makes them promise why their here and that they were sent by his parents. Hamlet for some reason says that he wants to hear a speech tonight.

English week 12
Hamlet act 1

Bernardo and Marcellus witness a ghost during their watch. The next night they brought Horatio and the ghost still appeared. The ghost doesn’t reply to Horatio and disappears. Horatio tells them the Danish army is preparing for a war soon so the prince of Norway can get back the land that his father forfeited. The ghost appears again and so Horatio tells them to take it down and attack. They realize that all their attacking is air. The ghost is about to reply but a rooster crows and scares it away. King and queen of Denmark get married and Hamlet is sad about losing his father. He’s very mad at his mother for marrying Claudius right after his father’s death. Horatio who is hamlets friend tells him that he was with has father the night before on watch duty and that a ghost appeared to them so Hamlet wanted to go on watch at night to find the ghost himself. The ghost appears and speaks to Hamlet alone telling him that Claudius is responsible for everything including his father’s death and it’s not the ghost and now it’s time for revenge.

Vol. B the thousand and one nights p.556-564,586

The story starts off with two brothers. Shahrayar and shahzaman. Shahrayar was the older brother and ruled India and indochina. Shahzaman ruled Samarkand. Shahrayar missed his brother and wanted him to visit so he sent his right hand man to call him. His brother agreed to come and went to tell his wife goodbye and saw that she was already with someone else. He got nervous and worried and said that women clearly cant be trusted. The two brothers heard yelling and thought the sky was falling. They hid and were scared. There was a demon that pulled out a figure that was a beautiful woman. The woman told them if they both dont sleep with her she will wake up the demon to kill them. After much argument she basically forced them into her. After the act she also forced them to give her their ring because she takes a ring from every man she sleeps with. She now has a total of 100 rings. Towards the end there’s a story about a man who had a pet parrot as a secret spy for when he traveled and left his wife alone at home. He found out that the wife had a lover while the husband was away and he was very mad. The wife found out about this and she told the parrot not to tell him anything anymore. The husband then asked the parrot what happened and thought he was lying so he killed the poor parrot. However the neighbors then told the husband that the parrot wasn’t lying!

Red Lotus of Chastity p. 962-967 p.964

There was a rich man named Dhanadatta and he didn’t have a son either. He really wanted to have a son. They tell this rich man that he should bring a sacrifice and have a son performed for him like happened in the past to other people that wanted a son. The rich merchant decided to take their word and try to bring a sacrifice to have a son because he didn’t have any other options. He had a son and named him Guhasena. It was time for his son to get married years later and his father went with him to help him and told everyone he was going on a business trip. As they were traveling, Dhanadatta found a women who he thought would be perfect for his son. The girl loved his son but her parents weren’t so thrilled about him. However, she decided to leave her parents behind just for him. They got married on the way back home to his city. Unfortunately years later his father died and he had to continue his business. An important business trip came up and his wife didn’t want him to go. She let him go because they were told to both hold onto a lotus and they will know if one partner is committing adultery. There were a group of fools that wanted to get his wife to commit adultery. However his wife wasn’t stupid and she fooled them while they thought they were fooling her. She then killed the nun and fools who were trying to get her to commit adultery. She was then worried about someone trying to kill her husband now out of revenge.

Sakuntala p. 921-942 up to p. 937

Honestly i’m a bit confused on this reading especially since I wasn’t in class since we started this and I didn’t catch up yet but this is my best understanding.

News breaks out that the festival is canceled and everyone is upset and confused as to why it’s canceled. They are told it’s because of the sakuntala and the king is very sad now. They found the kings ring with Sakuntala and they asked him for an explanation. He gave it to her as collateral and promised her he’ll bring her to his palace one day. A wealthy merchant died while away with no kids so their debating if the king gets to inherit his wealth because the wife could be pregnant now. The little boy finally walks in with two girls and the King is confused because he feels like this boy is really his child. They also agree that the child looks like the King and he feels comfortable around him. The boys ascetics start to get worried because they dont see the amulet box gift that the boys mother gave to him at his birth ceremony. The King asks what’s wrong and tells them not to worry because it’s on the floor right near them. As he’s picking it up they yell at him saying he can’t touch it only his parents can but it’s too late and he picks it up and has to deal with the consequence now. The king was calling the boy son and the boy was very annoyed telling the king not to call him son because hes not his father. Apparently the king really married his mother but no one knew until now and the King tells his son that its not his fault and he shouldnt be upset about it.

Volume B Sakuntala pg 876-894

The director is speaking to the actress and preparing her for the performance. She claims that she’s ready but the director says she should practice again because critics always want to mock actors. He tells her to start the play with a song to attract people’s attention. The king is riding on the chariot and sees that there’s an antelope and he aims to try to shoot him but everyone tells him that the antelope belongs to them and that he shouldn’t shoot it. The monk tells the king he should go see Sakuntala who is the daughter of the manager of the community. Sakuntalas friends feel that her father cares more about the trees than his daughter because he orders her to water them and it can take away some of her self respect. The king witnessed it too and it bothered him. Sakuntala and her friends don’t know that the king is watching them. After a bee is chasing Sakuntala and asks for help the king decides to step in and reveal himself. They are all in shock and are trying to do whatever they can to respect him and welcome him properly. They start telling the king secrets and private information and Sakuntala gets very angry especially if their her friends. She threatens them that she will tell her mother.
