Ultimately, what do you think Gregor’s metamorphosis means? What does it mean to be transformed into a giant bug?
Gregor’s metamorphosis may not seem as if it has much meaning at first, however it has a deeper rooted meaning. Gregor was the provider for his family and allowed them to live the life they did. He constantly felt like he was only providing for them, but would brush that thought away. However, once he turned into a bug, he was useless to his family. They didn’t try to accept their son for being a bug now, instead they alienated him and made him feel useless. Gregor always put everyone else ahead of himself, and expected his family to do the same for him which they unfortunately did not. As he could not provide for his family anymore and was not given any love or attention, he slowly came to his death
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
He does not have any power after his transformation. Before he transforms to the insect, he is not happy about his job. But, he has to work to support his family. After he changes his appearance, he doesn’t have to work. He can stay home and eat what his sister gives him. He thinks that he can relax himself at home and no more working. However, he realizes that he is not helpful for his family since he is no longer financially powerful. Based on the fact that he lost his job, he does not have any power on his family and anything because he can’t provide his family with financial support. Although his family tries to find a way to accept his transformation at the beginning, eventually, they don’t want him at the end of the story. It’s sad that his family decides to get rid of Gregor from home and after his realizes that his family does not want him, he dies.
Explain your understanding of Gregor’s death. How/why does he ultimately die?
Ultimately after the incident with the new tenants he slinks into his room and just lets go of the little life force he has left. The physical factors that contributed to his death are clearly the wound he suffers at the hands of his father which greatly weakens Gregor and his not eating. Towards the end he would just chew the food and spit it back out. On a deeper level Gregor no longer chooses to try to stay alive. He has nothing to live for and only poses a burden for his loved ones. I believe that when he listens to how his family feels about him particularly to what his sister says about having to rid themselves of him he loses all heart and chooses to let go of his meaningless existence.
–Ultimately, what do you think Gregor’s metamorphosis means? What does it mean to be transformed into a giant bug?
I believe Gregor turn into something who lives the way he kind of “wished” of living. He was tired of working and being under pressure to make ends meat in order for his family to be okay. Now that he turns into the giant bug he no longer has to work and is not depended on any longer. Though his family start changing and actually start being more unionized and independent it saddens Gregor that this happens after he turns into a cockroach. He is no longer needed and is isolated from his family. Gregor turning into a bug literally “bugged” his family and knowing this hurt Gregor so much that he became depressed and rarely ate and accepted death than living as a bug any longer.
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
While Gregor was a man, he had the most power. When he transformed into a cockroach, he was powerless. Gregor to some extent wanted to be like this though. He seemed to be burnt out working all the time and being criticized by his parent(s) that sleep and being isolated from the world is what seemed best during this time. What Gregor did not know is reactions he received by people around him. His sister became a nurturer and everyone else was frightened by him. And then there was death, death came so quickly after this transition which relieved everyone in the household.
How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
In the wake of his metamorphosis, his family transforms too. When Gregor was a human he is the only person who earns money and fulfill everyone demand. However, after his metamorphosis the family reunited and started working. They do not have enough time for Gregor because those people always stay home now they are working.
–At the end of the second section of the story, Gregor’s father pelts him with apples. What do you think this episode is about?
I think for his father is about re-taking back the position of head of the family. The father is using the opportunity to take revenge against Gregor for displacing him from his role of provider. I think that Gregor’s father does not really hate him, it is just an unintentionally reaction that end in one of the causes of Gregor’s death. Probably because the father belongs to an older generation he has the idea that only the husband must be the ruler and breadwinner of the family, otherwise the husband’s manhood could be doubt for the society.
–How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
Surprisingly enough Gregor’s family grows closer in his new physical appearance. He’s family was once so dependent on him and but once he was out of commission he was pushed back to the back fire. It took Gregor change for his family to make a change to become closer.
How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
They become independent and realize what they’re capable of. Without Gregor’s financial support, they each get a job and were able to get by. His mother makes lingerie while his sister works as a sales clerk. The father works at his old job as a banker. Their old lifestyle of relaxing and letting Gregor carry all the financial burden is gone. Gregor’s father who is described to be a bit feminine at the beginning became more masculine and resembles a man. Gregor’s sister who couldn’t do anything except play the violin at the start now replace Gregor’s role of taking care of the family.
How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
Gregor’s metamorphosis changed his family. Gregor was the breadwinner of the family and he provided for his family. So his family gotten used to that and once he turned into a giant bug, then they began to go through a metamorphosis too. The family began to get jobs because Gregor was unable to work. So towards the end, the family have no used of him because they could self-sustain all on their own and it changed his family for the better.
–How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
Gregor’s family becomes more independent, they all started working and helping out around the house unlike before. Specially his sister who is only 17 took upon taking care of Gregor. The father who had five years without working had to find a job at bank. They weren’t so happy about the changes and question why had Gregor done this to them. They all used to depend on Gregor to take care of anything money related and got accustomed to that. Now since Gregor’s metamorphosis they all had to take some type of responsibility making them more self sufficient.
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
He becomes less powerful after his metamorphosis. Since he transforms into a insect, seems like being more powerful in appearance so he can scare people. However, his metamorphosis reveals to his useless existence among family, which means he used to be capable of taking care of his family in spite of everything. Thus Gregor is more powerful before his metamorphosis.
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
I believe Gregor is stronger at the end of the story. Reason for this is because after being mentally immobilized from his new form, he had more time to just sit down and think about who he actually is a roach or Gregor. Also to make the choice of starving yourself or in other words commit suicide, it could be arguable that to commit such an act you have to be mentally strong and prepared. He knew the result and decide to anyway. No fear in facing death, which many people fear since death is the unknown. That has to show a sign of mental strength.
I see where you’re coming from, but to me it seems like a resignation to his fate. Like working the job in the first place for dad debts, and even as a cockroach, he wants them to see him as a bug and say “he can’t work.”
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
Gregor had no power after his transformation. on the other hand, before his transformation he had power. The only thing is he was morally obligated to do the job and support his family financially. However, if he wanted, he could have come out of that social obligation. He had power but he didn’t try using it for his own interest. He appeared to be dedicated to his family.
How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
Gregor’s family is different in their actions towards Gregor. They are less welcoming of him or inclusive of him in the family if at all. His mother can barely look at him, his father is violent towards him, and his sister, while she demonstrates care for him and tries to accommodate him, would rather not believe his presence to be real. In the end, we do find out that she believes that if Gregor really was inside the vermin in place of him now, he would let go and take them out of their misery. They do transform a lot on a personal level. His sister begins to work as do his parents. His father, who used to sit at home and do nothing while Gregor was the man of the house, goes back to work—his physical appearance changes a lot.
Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
physically, he becomes more powerful as he transformed into a giant bug that can scare anybody.
Emotionally, there are two parts and the firs one is right after he transformed to this giant bug he felt unacceptable when he looked at the mirror and refused to get out of his room and even after he showed himself to others and they didn’t accept the new form he felt powerless after he was the only source of support to the family he becomes nothing. the second part is when he decided to die. It is very hard for anybody to take a decision to kill himself by stop eating or any other way. however, he showed power when he decided not to eat and die to starve.
Explain your understanding of Gregor’s death. How/why does he ultimately die?
After his incident with the newer tenants, he just lets everything go and allows himself to die in peace. He was wounded severely by his father and it made him so weak that he didn’t eat. He lived for no reason, in his eyes he is worthless and after what his family said about how they feel about him he just gave up.
