  1. 3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

I believe that women are not raised to be “pleasing” anymore, however that is not to say it is somewhat still expected. Although women are raised today to get an education and to be as successful as men, there is still a pull on the past as I believe there always will be. As women are child-bearers, there are still expectations as to the women bearing children and taking care of her husband. Although I do not necessarily agree with the idea of women succumbing to these ideals, it still has a strong hold on women in society today.

  2. 2. Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?

She agrees in the sense of God having a plan. However, she feels that God can see “its just proportions in the womb of time”, and we were not made to, so it is only right for us to question why there are bad things.

  3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

I think most women are not raised to be “pleasing” anymore but perhaps women in developing or poor countries are. Women have more rights now and it’s normal for them to work and be independent. They don’t have to depend on their father or husband to survive. They can vote and own property. There’s so much more a women can do now however, I don’t think these apply to women in other countries. Girls raised in a developing country might still be raised to be pleasing, just like in the past. They could be treated cruelly and like property.

  4. What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?

Wollstonecraft seems heavily interested in changing the way women are educated. In her days women were only educated to be “pleasing”, but Wollstonecraft believes women should be educated just as the same as man to better society. she uses the example that if God says “everyone is equal” then that means man is not above woman and vise versa. Also she believes women are intelligent enough to learn new things and it will help in increasing women rights and setting them “free”.

  5. 3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

No I do not think women are raised to be pleasing anymore. Personal I was never raised and told how I should always accommodate a man or my man in that case. The conversation that was always held since I was a little girl was to not be impressed by anything a man has , to never go out searching for love , and anything a man can offer me I can get it myself. My family always stressed the fact of me having what I need and making myself well accomplished. Even though this was the main topic of conversation I was raised seeing my grandmother and grandfather having their own and growing and being successful , my grandmother still cooked dinner , fold clothes etc. I was raised seeing both sides of being pleasing and independent. Not everyone has that , but there is in fact a strong emphasis of women becoming successful themselves than becoming pleasing. There’s nothing wrong with either or.

  6. Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?

It is tricky the way Wollstonecraft interprets “Whatever is, is right.” She agrees to Pope that everything and everyone acts according to God’s plan. As she is speaking for women’s right and freedom that is because God created her that way. So, everybody should agree with the idea of women’s freedom. She is smart to use this line against the typical men who wants to confine women’s freedom.

  7. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

I believe Women today are raised to break barriers. Having a younger sister, She was raised to believe she is capable to do whatever she wants in this world. In the 21st Century, Women are more capable and accomplished then ever. Women in the 19th,18th…etc centuries used to be raised that they had to be hold down the home front, which included taking care of their men, raising the children and taking care of household chores. I believe women now are being raised now to embrace individuality and pursue careers and hobbies in which please them rather than anybody else.

  8. What does Wollstonecraft have to say about marriage? In her view, what would allow a woman to be a good wife and mother?

In her view, a marriage is a partnership between a husband and a wife. According to Wollstonecraft, a woman has to be independent from a man in order to be a good wife and mother. Then, how a woman can be independent from a man? She believes that the answer is an education. A woman needs to have equal knowledge and sense to keep the relationship healthy and strong. Also, a role of a good wife and mother is to educate her children.

  9. What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
Wollstonecraft was interested in changing the way women treated in our society. She does not likes the way women kept inside the house and taking care the children and husband. In her time women are busy to “please” their husband. She want women have the equal opportunity and treated fairly. Wife is the best partner for husband and a mother is the best educator for her children. If women do not have the opportunity for education, than how they will educate their children. She believes women are strong enough to support their families and Society should support them for their right.

  10. Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?

Wollstonecraft does not agree with Pope’s interpretation of “Whatever is, is right.” In fact, she uses his line to justify defying thoughts by women (since her passage is about women and their right to be educated). She says that since women have the power to question things, then perhaps this is how it is meant to be–having been given the capacity to question and evolve, humans are meant to do so. Hence, Pope’s interpretation of “whatever is, is right” is incorrect in that humans (women in particular) are not questioning more than they are meant to be and this too is the intention of God in the greater scheme of things.

  11. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

In today society, women are not being raised to be “pleasing” and more of being independent. Women now have more rights than they did before and their voice are being heard. In the past, women were just known to be child-bearers but now, we see women working for a living. Women have control over their own life and could do what men could do.

  12. 3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

I don’t think now days women are meant to be “pleasing” unlike the old days. Not saying we don’t fallow old custom at times, taking the pleasing role when we have to or want to do so. The pleasing role is not one that exists as the only role now days. Women are independent, self sufficient and are able to get jobs just like mens. Now days we go get and education and we bring as much as men do to the table. Women are able to go ahead and get out of the house and not have to cater to a man. Society has evolve to the point that men and women are view as equal and both can part take in taking care of the keeping of the house and children.

  13. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

In the past years, yes. Mothers and fathers had high hopes of their daughters finding the right man for them and raised them to have serious skills. Cook, clean, raise children. In today’s world women aren’t raised to be pleasurable, but raised to be independent. Times have changed and with the modern culture women are making their own decisions rather than following proper morals. You don’t see classes on how to get the man of your dreams these days or how to attract certain men. Parents raise their kids to make the right decisions, not how to look appealing.

  14. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?

Back then for sure, mothers taught their daughters to have various skills such as cleaning, cooking, ability to maintain children and what not to make themselves good enough for the right man. Now though, Parents raise their children to be independent because times have changed and it is no longer just a man’s world.
