  1. Explain your understanding of Gregor’s death. How/why does he ultimately die?

I feel Gregor’s death ties in with his symbolic banishment from the family through the pelting of the apples in reference to the garden of eden. Gregor had realized the burden he had been since that point onwards including the neglect he had started to feel. The tipping point after his sister had expressed her disdain for him was not the ultimate cause of his death as he had been starving himself well before that point. It shows that the family did not understand him as his intentions were to relieve the family of it’s burdens. Gregor ultimately dies a tragic death, as no one will remember him and he will be replaced by Grete’s husband, who will be the parents new son unlike himself as the “unfortunate son.”

  2. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
After the metamorphosis of Gregor, there is a gradual change among the family. His father gets a job and starts being responsible for the family. His sister Grete steps up for him. She feeds Gregor and takes care of him. He finds out that all the family members are capable of working if they have to as they take over their financial burden. His mother becomes physically and mentally weak who seems to suffer the most from Gregor’s metamorphosis. Whenever she sees the bug she tends to faint or scream all the time which implies her failure in the maternal role.

  3. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

Gregors family transforms in the wake of his metamorphosis in many ways. For one, the sister gets a job and starts contributing to the family. The father also gets a job which he was capable of all along. His family’s selfishness also comes out. Gregor finds out that they have money on the side. He also starts getting treated poorly because he is no longer bringing “the bread” home. To the family Gregor becomes a burden that they now have to take care of.

  4. –Ultimately, what do you think Gregor’s metamorphosis means? What does it mean to be transformed into a giant bug?

It means to show how insignificant Gregor Sansa’s life was, to begin with. Before turning into a cockroach he worked to provide for his family. After the metamorphosis, Gregor understood that all without all his hard work he would not be appreciated by his family. In a sense, his life was insignificant, to begin with, and the metamorphosis only highlighted that part more.

  5. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.
I think that Gregor is more powerful after his metamorphosis. Before all this occurred, his family relied on him for all the financial things. He had a lot of pressure on him. However, after he turns into a bug, he no longer has to be the head of the house with all the responsibilities. His father is able to get a job and he finds out that they have money saved. This means that Gregor was laboring under false pretenses. Now he is getting all the attention because he turned into this giant bug with no responsibilities.

  6. Gregor emerges from his room one last time when he hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers. What is the significance of this? What meaning does music hold for Gregor here?
I think this scene demonstrates Gregor’s last hope to attract the family’s attention to show them that he was so lonely. Gregor wants someone to accompany with him at least give him a little hope to keep him still alive. The music in here means a kind of prospect or hope to Gregor. Because if Gregor was a pure cockroach he wouldn’t understand Grete’s music. Gregor wants to uses his appreciation to the music to prove to his parents and sister that he still hold some characteristics of a human. He appreciated Grete’s music more than anybody in the world. Once he has the thought to earn enough money to make Grete into the Muscial Academy. Music in here serves as a pathway between Gregor and his family. If the family could understands the meaning behind Gregor’s appearance then Gregor might have some courage to support himself live longer.

  7. Explain your understanding of Gregor’s death. How/why does he ultimately die?

After the metamorphosis took place in Gregor, his life had been terribly changed. He started to be the burden for his family. At first, he no longer made a contribution to solving the economic problem for his family, instead, he became a problem in his household. Thus, all member of his family gradually hated him and cannot take care of him anymore. In the other word, he lost his value in the family even the whole society and that is why all people neglected him. As a matter of fact, it is a relief for him and his family that he can end his tragedy life and his family would discard the burden. In fact, it is unmeaningful for Gregor to be lived due to the fact that he would not be able to be thought highly of by others and get happy as far as he longs for. Hitherto, his death may be beneficial to both his family and him.

  8. –How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

Gregor’s family is originally described as very dependent on him and his career. His father is unemployed and resents Gregor for being the breadwinner in the family. His mother is weak and is too scared to accept Gregor’s change, convincing herself that he will return to normal. As time passes, Gregor’s metamorphosis leads to a change in his whole family. His father gets a job and is back to working for his family’s money. His mother becomes accepting of Gregor’s change and is content with getting rid of him. The biggest change comes in Gregor’s sister who matures and becomes a woman who earns a living for herself and is capable of taking care of others. These changes are displayed at the end while the family is on a walk, we see the family financially stable and happy, and the parents proudly say their daughter has become a woman and is ready for marriage.

  9. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

In the wake of Gregor’s metamorphosis, his family united to shoulder the burden left by his transformation.  When Gregor was a human he was the head of the household and carried all responsibilities. But as a result of the turn of events, they are all forced to work and rely on each other. On the other hand, Gregor didn’t have to carry the burden of his family anymore and not work at a job he disliked when he was human. Overall, the everyone in the family had to go through a major transformation to adapt to the new circumstances.

  10. Gregor’s metamorphosis is an awakening for his family. Before Gregor became a giant cockroach, he was known to be the supplier of the family. Whatever money he made at work was used towards the families expenses. This was because his father did not work, and they needed a source of income. From Gregor’s metamorphosis, we see a shift in character roles. The father now works because Gregor can’t, and Gregor’s sister is now taking the main role in the family since Gregor can’t.

  11. Gregor’s family is transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis, by showing the reader that the family could provide for themselves all along. Instead of being reliant on Gregor bringing in the income for the family to live off, we now see the father and his sister start to work. The father of the family starts to show he actually can work and his sister being there to help. It shows how the family does not respect Gregor.

  12. –Gregor emerges from his room one last time when he hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers. What is the significance of this? What meaning does music hold for Gregor here?

I think the significance of this is that it shows Gregor still cares for Grete, and it shows his lingering of his human side. When Gregor was a human he wanted to save money to send Grete to school for the violin. When he heard his sister playing the violin, he came out to listen, eager to tell his sister that he wanted to send her to school. This is significant because though he is a bug, he still holds his thoughts and emotions from when he was a human. Music acts like a “pull” for Gregor, tugging at his humanity. However, Grete seems to have forgotten the human side of her brother, only thinking of him as a bug. She has become disgusted at the sight of him, and insists that the family should get rid of him. This is a turning point for Gregor, as he realizes he’s such a burden for the family and consequently dies.

  13. Gregor Samsa is indeed more powerful after his metamorphosis than before. Before his metamorphosis, Gregor was subservient to his parents. He would work all day in a job that he did not enjoy all because he was trying to support his family. He did so because he felt sorry for his family, he enabled his family to live off his labor. He was being used by his family. After his metamorphosis, however, he was full of power because he could make a real change for his family. After the metamorphosis, his family also begun a metamorphosis because of his own. Thus, Gregor was more powerful because his actions before his metamorphosis had no effects on his family, but after, his state of uselessness allowed his family to fend for themselves.

  14. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

Gregor’s family has transformed a lot after he turns into a bug. They start taking more responsibility now since Gregor has no job and cannot provide for the family anymore. The father gets a job and his sister helps around the house to take care of Gregor although she considers it as an act of duty. The family is now more hatred towards Gregor since he adds no value to the family financially and they consider him a burden. They start to signal Gregor to leave their lives as they would be better off without him. His family shows their true colors and transform into cold hearted and disrespectful for Gregor after they realize he cannot pay off the family’s debt.

  15. Gregor was never powerful to begin with. As his life as a human he had dreams and aspiration of sending sister to a music academy and leaving his job but none of that ever came to fruition. He was also being taken advantage of by his parents who kept him working when he did not need to. His life after the metamorphosis just made him become more aware of how expendable he was because his dad was able to get a job and once he died the family were able to step outside and start a fresh promising start.

  16. I think Gregor is more powerful before his metamorphosis. I think this because of his mobility and being able to be apart of society. Not being apart of society can create a dysfunctional thinking process and will destroy you from the inside out. Gregor’s family is transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis in the sense that they become more independent. They also stop relaying on Gregor so it changes the roles in the home. Gregor’s father is infuriated with the fact that he can not depend on his son anymore and the apple that killed Gregor is the anchor of endless pain Gregor has felt throughout the story. Gregor transforming into a bug is the total opposite of what his lifestyle demands of him. He is a traveling sales man who needs to socialize. Because he is a bug he can not socialize.

  17. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.

The answer isn’t as obvious as I’d like to believe, as I feel that Gregor is powerful both before and after. Before the metamorphosis, Gregor was the one that his family depended on. He was the one source that helped them to survive, and without him, they wouldn’t really be able to get by. His hard work resulted in the money that they later use in the story to begin a new life after Gregor’s metamorphosis. Other than his family, the mobility that Gregor had as a human resulted in him being more sociable, which gives the power to converse. It is so, however, that after his metamorphosis, he is still powerful, but a little less, as he influenced the family to become independent of him. Because of his transformation, they had to begin working and fending for themselves. But this only shows that they do not need him. And his transformation in the physical form limited his mobility, mentally and physically. He cannot converse with others and has no power over himself if he were to try progress in life.

  18. Gregor emerges from his room one last time when he hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers. What is the significance of this? What meaning does music hold for Gregor here?

This final scene of Gregor’s represented his last attempt at being human before giving up. He truly appreciated the music and was moved by it, unlike a bug would ever be. He still retained his humanity while in the physical body of this giant vermin. Upon hearing his sister play, he emerged from his room, hoping she would connect with him for the simple fact that he still felt connected with her, but much to his dismay, he was still of great terror to her and everybody in the house, at which point he was forced to retreat back to his room. There he passed away lonely and dejected. This scene is significant because it truly demonstrates Gregors human perspective and emotion, which once lost due to exhaustion, brought upon him a swift death, as he realized he would never be seen as “Gregor” again.
