In Lu Xun’s “New Year Sacrifice”, the theme of gender discrimination stands out the most to me because Xianglin’s wife is forced to remarried to another man even when she decline strongly. Her family forces her to remarry another man only for the money. Her feelings and thoughts has never been considered. This shows how the women in that period was seen as slave, or being disparaged from men and Xianglin’s wife is one of those who suffers from this period. Also, when Xianglin’s wife first husband passed away, she become a widow and get many negative comments and hateful eyesight from the people of the community that she lives in. This shows one of the outdated Chinese tradition at that time, women must be married to a man. At that time period, people thinks that women is not strong and smart as men so their only contribution to the community is to marry a man, help him do the housework, and produce the next generation. This old tradition is tied tightly in many Chinese people’s mind, they think that if women don’t marry to men, then they are useless. This is what makes people of the community look down on Xianglin’s wife because without a husband, or as a widow, Xianglin’s wife is a merely a useless woman wasting the resource of the community. Viewing Xianglin’s wife’s life in a three person point of view, I can even feel the sadness and toughness of her life from the words of this story. She has been married twice, and twice her husband passed away, even her only child was taken away from her by the natural. In addition to that, she has to bear all the harsh language coming from the people of her community. As a outsider, I can say that Xianglin’s wife is stronger than many man. No one should have to suffer from all these pain, but she is able to endure all these terrible events and continuing living her life makes her the strongest person in her community, in my opinion. Although Xianglin’s wife died from poverty at the end of the story, she never gives up on life despite all these sufferings she never have to endure; therefore, Xianglin’s wife act as a strong figure to reject the old Chinese tradition that women are merely a tool for giving birth to the next generation.
