Can Wang

S.C.U.M was said to the short of “Society for Cutting Up Men”. Not only in the manifesto, but also in the name, was filled with radical words and languages. I do think that makes sense and seems effective, because the manifesto aims to evoke people’s attention, and passion to be part of the party. In fact, they want revolution, no matter to eliminate the male power, or free the Black. Using radical words and languages can make the audience feel the motion, feel the angry, and then make an action to be part of the revolution. The radical languages are full of passion and full of literary color of the text, it can support the enthusiasm of the radical youth, excite the hearts of struggling people. According to the result of this revolution, it was effective, because it attracted lots of radical youth to involve in the revolution, and fight for the freedom.

First, I want to talk about the picture of the painting, the painting is kind of mix of lines, stitching patterns and distortion, the overall tone is dark. The background is with a pair of Arab-style diamond-shaped mid-dotted, which is repeated and makes the whole picture look a little like Oriental Indian feeling. The girl’s face, chest, buttocks and mirrors are used with smooth round line, the girl’s arm, the hair is soft. The picture is red, yellow, purple-based, half bright: that is the girl’s youth; half is sad: it is unique youth scars. Bold lines to depict a girl is rare, but it can also add a little of the Spanish wildness.

The main picture is a blonde girl, her two hands are on the both sides of the mirror. At the time, Picasso’s paintings have utilized the light in the face, from different angles presented by the different colors. The gentle and bright sunshine of afternoon came from outside the house, the girl’s half of the face seems to be infected with the sun’s halo, bright yellow and with a little reddish. Because of the strong light, the color of her face in the mirror shows some dark, and the rose color, and that may be a careful makeup. What a bright sunshine, What a beautiful afternoon, the girl’s mood must be very happy. But the appearance of the painting shows a little sad feeling. The background of the mirror is no longer happy bright yellow, instead of a melancholy cool tone – purple; girl’s eyes did not look directly at the mirror, but glanced to the side; her eyes are filled with sadness instead of naive, even the eyes of the faint light halo seems to be the tears on her face; her slightly tilted nose seems to be angry.

The picture is painted with a girl full of rich feelings, but she seems to be the shadow of the painter himself. The mirror is a magical thing, it can reflect itself, it can make people see the most real oneself, it can make people see their own heart. Exactly is what the painter is, he is looking for a breakthrough in the life of the export, the outside world is as the same sunshine of the afternoon, colorful, but which is what he really want, is the extremely luxurious creation? he did not want anything, those halo, those substances, or those praise. He wants freedom, you can enjoy the beauty of tear for this freedom, for this innate wild, he can ignore all the criticism of the outside world. As the girl in front of this mirror, no one can give what she wants, even this cluster of bright sun can not give her. Only the freedom can rule her world.

“Ding…”, Can turned off the Alarm fifth time. It seems that he can’t open his eyes. It is a rainy day again. Another reason is that Can is sick, it has been a few days, he can’t stop cough. When the alarm rings the sixth time, Can opens his eyes, he look outside the window, and struggled to get off the bed. He walked slowly to the bathroom, and looked at the mirror. “Who is this guy with white skin, white lips, and so stressed?”. He quickly washed the face to make him wake up. It is almost late, he said, I have to leave right now. He rushed downstairs from 4th floor. and turned left to the walking board next to Hudson River. Can lives in Newport, the first stop from Manhathan to New Jersey. He forgot to take the umbrella, so he put his hat on and rushed in the rain. Usually, Can likes to watch the skyline of Manhathan, but he can see nothing today. He ran to the Path station in 10 minutes, and got inside. Can sighed, watching the crowd people in the station, and thought, “I will not get on the first train again, I have to wait to the second one.” When the train is coming inside, he is surprised, the train is almost empty. He easily gets on the train, and it only takes him 15 minutes to arrive at 23rd street. After getting out the Path Station, Can runs to the Campus, there is only 5 minutes left for the first class. He can’t run fast because of the rain, but he tried. When he stands outside the classroom, it is exactly 9:00am. Can smiled and thought, “I made it.”

I kind of agree some points of Freud. He mentioned, children follows parents as the model when they grow up. That is totally true. When I was a kid, I learn what my parents taught me, I learned their words, their behaviors. My father is a policeman, I admire him a lot. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a strong man like him. Absolutely, when I grow up, I go to college, I come abroad, I know more and more about the world, the culture, and the education. Especially the culture shock of United States, compared to Chinese, I found some disadvantage of my family education, but that doesn’t mean that I should eliminate all the education from my parents, they taught how to be a good man. I may critize some methods they use to educate me, but I don’t hate them, I appreciate everything they did to me. Thus, I will keep what I know in mind, and use that method to teach my kids in future. That is how the society works, learn, do, and improve it. So I don’t agree Freud’s opinion about critizing the parents, because I love them, and I am the man they made.

In my opinion, the untranslatable person should love themselves, one could be confident, from internal to external. He believes himself. He will never be a clinging trumpet creeper, suing the high boughs to show off his height. Untranslatable person should be a spring, bringing cool solace all year long to friends, family and colleagues. I will describe “untranslatable self” as a tree, standing straightly in the world, make my roots entwined underground. I have my own crimson flowers, to resist cold spells, storms and thunder. I love my self, I love the world, and I want to be a true man to fight for my dream. No matter what the others think about me, I will be a man that I want to be. I am responsible to my family, my love, and myself. For the society, I contribute my effort to make it better. Regardless the negative attitude around me or inside me, I am always positive. That is difficult, but I will keep my words.

Everyone could be untranslatable, because no one can understand you better than yourself. The more you are confidence and insistent about being yourself, the more untranslatable you are.

Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope is a Thing with Feathers” , reminds me the similar feeling in Jane Eyre. At the beginning, Jane regarded Mr. Rochester “a royal eagle, chained to a perch, should be forced to entreat a sparrow to become its purveyor.” She did hold sympathy to Mr. Rochester, but her adoration was more than that because she thought that royal eagle, although getting injured, still remained its charm and temperament. In the latter part of the text, Jane comforted Mr. Rochester that he was a green, vigorous tree and she described herself as plant that have to lean on the tree to grow. Jane said she was a sparrow and a plant, while Mr. Rochester was an eagle and a tree, which reflected that Mr. Rochester was outstanding and excellent in her eyes. The most famous word in Jane Eyre is that ‘Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you, and full as much heart!’ Jane said this to Mr. Rochester when he pretended to want to get married with Miss Blanche.

During that time, Jane felt hope when Mr. Rochester talked to her, said lovely words to her, but at the same time, Mr. Rochester walked close to Miss Blanche. To Jane, hope of love is like “feathers, that perches in the soul,… and never stops – at all-“

Jane loves Rochester deeply always-from the beginning to the end. The process to chase true love is explicitly expressed by the poem, “Sweetest – in the Gale – is heard – And sore must be the storm-“

Jane met Mr. Rochester, after long time of miserable life. Rochester wanted to marry Jane without telling her his mad wife’s story. When they prepare things for marriage, Rochester says he will put the diamond chain “round Jane neck, and circlet on her forehead, clasped the bracelet s on these fine wrists and load her finger s with rings”. He used visible jewelry to limit Jane invisibly. Jane felt that she is oppressed. She felt Rochester’s smile has “such a sultan might, bestow on a slave his gold and gems had enriched ”, and she, herself, just like the east allusion, was without freedom. Jane knows, facing Rochester, she is no longer as independent as before. Jane’s heart is always in a state of intense struggle. She willingly devotes herself to Rochester, but she still tries to grasp her own soul.

When the secret is discovered, Rochester hopes that Jane can go with her in the name of love. Jane is nearly shaken. After all, she keeps her individual soul. In Jane’s life, she never stops struggling against miserable life and misfortune. She hasn’t a noble position, an illustrious background, wealth or a beautiful appearance. The only proud thing for her is her self-respect, which is supported by her self-confidence and her staunch independence. She never expects that Rochester can love her because she thinks there is a big gap between them forever. When they fall in love, Jane has to keep her self-respect and independence in case of losing her self. What she can give to Rochester is only her love, her infatuation, her spiritual support and nothing else. However, what Rochester gives her is more than hers. He can also improve Jane Eyre’s social status and increase her wealth. This unequal exchange makes Jane Eyre uneasy. The situation makes her feel that they are not quite equal and her independence is also threatened. When Jane were aware that Rochester had a wife, and Rochester was trying to make her stay, she said, “I DO love you, more than ever: but I must not show or indulge the feeling: and this is the last time I must express it.” “No, sir, finish it now; I pity you—I do earnestly pity you.”” “Mr. Rochester, I no more assign this fate to you than I grasp at it for myself. We were born to strive and endure—you as well as I: do so. You will forget me before I forget you.” To maintain the equality of marriage, she refused to be Rochester’s lover, farewell to the rich life, a wandering life. Jane violated the traditional notions of women at the time, and emphasized equality between men and women. Jane didn’t keep silent, she expressed her feeling and protected her self-respect and value.

Sunrise always represents the hope and the future. The human being lives as the sun rising. As the theme in the Romantic Period, poet, and artist using art and poem to express their love of life, the hope of future. Sunrise was also the symbol of hope in many works.

I am a person who loves nature, and life. When 2017 comes, my girlfriend and I decided to welcome the first sunrise of 2017. We drove down to Stanley Island at the early morning on Jan. 1^st, 2017. At 6:30 in the morning we were already, on the beach, waiting for the sun to rise. First, a bit of pale ray appeared in the east, then it became brighter and brighter. An orange top of a cap rose little by little from the sea. Suddenly, the sun sprang out of the seawater, looking like a large elliptic ball, and the sky in the east became red. Later, the sun was hidden behind a piece of cloud. When it appeared again, the sun changed from red to bright red, then to golden. As it rose, it became silvery white and shone out. The light was so intense that we couldn’t look at it directly. At that time, the whole sea was in the golden sunlight. We were impressed by the beauty. When the sun shined on my face, I smell the hope of the new year. I made my wish for the future, and I will greet each day with hope and love.

Enlightenment is a breaking through of new ideas and is a huge step in the development of modern civilization.  It was a milestone for the continent of Europe in that it brought about the realization that people are born equal; ultimately ending the feudal hierarchy. It also established the roots of America’s constitution.

As we know, China has been a monarchy for thousands of years.  It is so hard for the people to change their old way of thinking.  It seems like the Chinese people are used to being suppressed and unconditionally obeying the orders of their superiors.  The Chinese mind is changing today.  People have started talking about freedom, and the pursuit of civil rights.  However, look at the lives we have now.  The government is still like an organized gang.  Being an officer is a lucrative position, and almost transparently corrupt.  People have no candid place to appeal their grievances. Grievances such as: breathing the worst air quality, and eating various toxic additive food.

I was born in 1992.  Thinking back to the late 18th century in France, about 200 years ago, almost the whole world has progressed in regards to human right t.s.  But not China.  While the rest of the world is enjoying real human rights, it is difficult and dangerous just to find an open place to speak one’s own political opinion.

I don’t know when or if the Chinese government will give its people their civil rights; the rights that allow their people to speak freely, or to elect their respective leaders, or to abolish the old hierarchy.  However, I do feel that as these injustices continue, the Chinese people may become increasingly aggravated and start a revolution, just like the French people who guillotined their king.

China is at stake, and we need an enlightenment.
