Vivak – Untranslatable Self

Song Of Myself by Walt Whitman focuses on the power of self-identity. Throughout the whole poem are there are various parts where Walt discusses how self-identity plays a role in defining yourself and your part in the world. By doing so not only does he show the importance of self-identity in yourself but also how society and the world around you plays a role in various factors.
The first part focuses on caring and celebrating yourself. This is an aspect that seems lost in society, Walt Whitman really touches a vital point in the “untranslatable self” by describing self virtue as an internal energy that can’t easily be explained.

The second part focuses on people and the world as a whole. In this part he refers to people as “fragrances” and explains how each person becomes “intoxicated” by the people around them because they influence them so heavily. However, at the end of the day it is important you who are as a person and whatever the situation, you should always listen to yourself.

The fourth part focuses on the differences between individuals. Even though we don’t have a specific reason as to why were are on this planet and that we all may look different, we still all live. This part shows how each individual should understand that they are alive, and all that means is that you can anything. It’s something that is clearly obvious in our lives but not taken advantage of.

The last part focuses how “untranslatable” an individual is. There are so many parts of an individual that stimutameously make them up and at the same time remain impossible to explain. There are so many things about an individual and aspects around them that shape them as a person. Walt Whitman does an excellent job in dissecting them and explaining them.

Jane Eyre and Audre Lorde’s

After reading the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house i realized that Audre’s has many things in common as Jane because they all went through many difficulties because of their difference. Since has a little girl Jane was always embarrassed in  front of people, and accused of being a  liar, she was not getting everything she wanted to have as a child. Jane was treated very differently from other children she was not speaking up and later on she started to speak up and have her voice be heard.  She felt alone and with  nobody support especially her family who instead of good taking care of her they mistreat her. The fact of having her voice been heard had save her to many things and success as well her resistance to her struggle has been her key. Audre Lorde’s been a black feminist lesbian and rejected by the society because of her being lesbian. it was something very hard for people to accept who she really was and she had to go to many struggle as Jane because of their difference. Resistance and being very brilliant was the best thing that help the both people to achieve their goals and not being rejected has give them more motivation to fight for their own belief and right. even the day that Jane reply back to her aunt she couldn’t believe because she think she will always continue doing her bad things and has a child she can’t do nothing which Jane prove her wrong by defending herself. Jane and Audre’s have fight hard for their right and speak up in order for other people to know about their feelings as well.

Oliver’s Commute

It was a gloomy Monday morning; Oliver tentatively woke up at 7:15am but snoozed a few times till 8am. Once that final 8am alarm rang, his sheets flew off, he stood up had a stretch, did his morning bathroom routine, and once that ice cold water hit his body in the shower, he was officially awake. Music playing and clothing flying everywhere he put together an outfit that was both comfortable for school and appropriate for work. Flying down the steps of his walk up building he picked up a small iced coffee and walked east to the R, W train. It was foggy and misty morning, which reminded Oliver of a high school football practice. A light shined on his head- he forgot his umbrella. He had to turn around and conquered a massive amount of ground in order to be on time for his 9AM. Thankfully he was able to get the umbrella from his apartment without wasting too much time. Back on the road, there was an abundance of tall good-looking girls while walking on Prince Street, the heart of SOHO. But with those pretty girls, came many businessmen smoking cigarettes on their walk to their destination. Finally, Oliver made it to the train station, once he got there he noticed he had insufficient fare on his metro card so he had to quickly refill. Waiting on the line, while watching a train pass, he was getting frustrated. He then got on the next subway, went north to 23rd street. In need of some potassium, he was able to buy a banana from a cart and get to class on time. Before walking into class, Oliver noticed a man with long red hair and freckles who was smoking a vaporizer blowing a cloud of smoke which blasted in someone’s face.

The Sublime

I have experienced many sublime in my life which guide me and give me more ideas about other country and their culture.  especially in Africa. New York City is the best sublime around the world and most people want to have. When i first came in 20010 i went to the status of liberty is was amazing and was so surprised to see such huge and nice thing like that. i had to take so many pictures and send them to my family back in Ivory Coast so they can see how beautiful New York is. My second experience of the sublime was when i was To India and went to a wedding of my father coworker. the decoration, clothes and music was very different from the one i know , i have never experienced such an amazing wedding like that it was extremely nice and make me want to have my wedding in india because it is a fabulous place to have the best wedding ever. The best sublime that i will never forget was my trip to cancun it was amazing. Cancun is the best city to have fun in family because they have beautiful beach that i have never seen before and their hotel were cheap which surprised me. The water was all blue and the sand all white, they were a lot of dolphins that swim with people and the Club name Coco bongo which has great dancers and good music. All these experienced were amazing that is why i will always remember.

Introduction to the Enlightenment

Enlightenment is connected to our lives through our progress. Meaning, the shaping of our character, our beliefs and our personality. People progress throughout their life in different ways with different views according to the circumstances they grew up with.

We tend as humans, to pursue new things and we move towards innovation. Enlightenment is about progressing and learning throughout life. At the same time, with change and progress comes worries and nostalgia which make us go back in time and think twice about our decisions.

Usually, the people who tend to change and are adaptable to different environments and situations are more successful and more outgoing than others. Enlightenment is a wake up call for some people. Especially people who have goals and dreams they want to achieve.

In the other, side there is people who do not really like change in their life. They are constant. Once they achieve a certain standard they do not want to change. Oppose to the ambitious people who want to have more and more all the time.

For example, enlightenment is key to the progress of politics in a country. There is always new changes made to laws because with time people learn and get more experienced. Without enlightenment politics would not function properly because the situation in a country today its not the same as 500 years ago. People change, they progress and are constantly learning new things. Therefore, change is necessary in our life for our personal growth but also for the growth of our society.

The Concept of Sublime as Experienced in Daily Life

In my opinion, the concept of sublime has to do with the representation of power through using techniques that have gothic, fearful, and clarity elements in it. We encounter the sublime everyday in our life through our imagination.

Sometimes our mind can go beyond what we thought. Literature is all about using your imagination to portray or explain a phenomenon that happens in reality. This happens so that it can make the work more interesting for the reader.

During Romanticism, authors would use different elements in their works mostly religious that implied power and fear at the same time. They believed that when there is fear there is power. In everyday life we see politicians and people who know how to use their words and make them have a powerful meaning.

We encounter the sublime everyday in our life whether we are a religious person or no. One of the ways we encounter the sublime is when we think about death or when we loose somebody we loved. The thoughts that surround us cause us fear and pain. When we gather with friends and talk about supernatural things like ghost story telling, when we talk about the people who died or even death itself, we feel constant fear. Even when we look at the sky at night and we see the stars and the “milky way” it appears beautiful at first but if we stare at it for a long time and start thinking about our existence it starts getting scary and we feel fear.

In conclusion, the sublime is a concept that was used during the Romantic Period to portray power, fear and greatness and the same time. Its the relationship of mind and nature. One of the greatest authors that portrayed the sublime in the best way was Dante Alighieri in “Paradise, Inferno and Purgatory” where he combined different elements of Romanticism including the sublime and love.

Lorde’s “The Transformation of Silence into Language” & “The Master’s Tools”

Lorde is a black lesbian woman that stands up for ones right of free speech. She stands up for her beliefs and wants to express herself for who she really is.

Jane Eyre was also a woman who stood up for her rights especially for quality between genders. When Jane was fighting for the man she loved she felt insecure and not good enough for him because of the boundaries that society hat put her because she was not from the same social class as him. In one side, she would let this take control of her and she would become very insecure but on the other side she would take control again and accept herself for who she is.

Just like Lorde she was someone who wanted women to express themselves for who they are and have equal standards with men. Lorde basically said that we as women have to pick and choose our words when we write about something because of the criticism and judgment we will get afterwards.

Both Jane Eyre and Lorde are two works that focus on the self-empowerment of women and how to overcome the obstacles that come as consequences for speaking up for themselves. Jane Eyre is a woman that is trying to be somebody else just to please society and Lorde in the other side a woman that is proud of who she is and she will always speak up for herself. But, both of them are fighting the discrimination against women and the limits that society has put them. Such limits that do not allow them to leave their life as they really want it.

Can’s Commute

“Ding…”, Can turned off the Alarm fifth time. It seems that he can’t open his eyes. It is a rainy day again. Another reason is that Can is sick, it has been a few days, he can’t stop cough. When the alarm rings the sixth time, Can opens his eyes, he look outside the window, and struggled to get off the bed. He walked slowly to the bathroom, and looked at the mirror. “Who is this guy with white skin, white lips, and so stressed?”. He quickly washed the face to make him wake up. It is almost late, he said, I have to leave right now. He rushed downstairs from 4th floor. and turned left to the walking board next to Hudson River. Can lives in Newport, the first stop from Manhathan to New Jersey. He forgot to take the umbrella, so he put his hat on and rushed in the rain. Usually, Can likes to watch the skyline of Manhathan, but he can see nothing today. He ran to the Path station in 10 minutes, and got inside. Can sighed, watching the crowd people in the station, and thought, “I will not get on the first train again, I have to wait to the second one.” When the train is coming inside, he is surprised, the train is almost empty. He easily gets on the train, and it only takes him 15 minutes to arrive at 23rd street. After getting out the Path Station, Can runs to the Campus, there is only 5 minutes left for the first class. He can’t run fast because of the rain, but he tried. When he stands outside the classroom, it is exactly 9:00am. Can smiled and thought, “I made it.”

Gilbert’s Commute

Step One: I walked out my door, took the elevator to the first floor. Got out the main door, and took a left on Morris Ave. Once I hit Burnside Ave and took a left. I walked until I hit the four train. Climbed the stairs to the train platform and got on the train. I got off the train at Grand Central and transferred unto the 6 train. I got off at 23rd Street. Existed the 4 train through Credit Swiss building. Walked left on Park Ave, hit 24th street then took a right until I got to the Baruch Building.

Step Two: As soon as I stepped outside, I smelled rain in the air, and indeed, I saw little drizzles of rain. I saw many faces walk past me but didn’t pay mind to anyone in particular. I heard nothing but the sound of the music I was listening to through my headphones.

Step Three: The second I saw the rain, I thought to myself, “ugh this is going to ruin my morning.” Whenever it rains, the trains delay. I have a midterm first thing. So I really need to get to class on time. As I stepped deeper and deeper into the rain, I started to realize that it was just mere drizzles – that the rain was not too serious.

Step Four: Little Timmy may or may not have walked past Gilbert. Lil’ Timmy may or may not have looked as Gilbert. Lil’ Timmy may or may not have noticed that Gilbert was amongst one of the only people outside who didn’t have an umbrella. Who cares, if he gets wet then he gets wet. Everybody is busy minding their own business. For all we know, Lil’ Timmy may have walked past Gilbert without even noticing his presence.

Jyoti’s commute

Knocking down ten things at once with her giant bag, Jyoti tried to look for her umbrella in the heaping mess of clothes and books scattered all over her room. Finally she pulled out her giant yellow umbrella from underneath a pile of laundry she never folded or put away and gave a quick final glance at her dresser to make sure she hadn’t left anything she needed. As she created a mental note in her head to clean up her room when she came back from school, she jumped over her mess and ran down the stairs. Her dad honked the car horn as she quickly grabbed her granola bar and slipped into the easiest shoes to put on. As she opened the door she shivered as a gust of wind blew her hair out of her eyes and left goosebumps down her arms. She walked down the porch and felt the soft drizzle of rain tickling her nose and landing softly on her jacket, she hated gloomy rainy days; oh how she wished there was a sun shower or any ray of light that could make her not want to crawl back into her bed and spend the rest of the day underneath her covers sleeping. “Will you hurry up, you’re not the only person who has places to go.” Jyoti’s dad wasn’t a very patient man but then again neither was she. She laughed and sarcastically walked even slower to the car as her dad shook his head. He thought of how he ended up with a daughter as silly as her who never found a moment of seriousness even as she was getting late for school. As she settled into the passenger seat, she fumbled with her earphones to cancel out the sound of her dad listening to the weather on the radio. She rolled her eyes as she though of the amount of times she tried to convince him he could just go on the weather app on his iPhone. She closed her eyes as the voice of Roy Woods swam across her eardrums. Minutes passed before she opened her eyes and realized she was already at the 169th F train station. She waved a quick goodbye to her father and ran down the steps of the subway station and swiftly walked by the crowd of people headed the same way as her. Just as disorganized as her room, was her bag. She dug through the piles of notes and gum wrappers to find her wallet squeezed in between her laptop and textbook. She quickly swiped her metro card and sighed to see that she had to refill it again after this ride. Luckily the F train was already there as she climbed down the steps and quickly found a seat big enough to put down her bag beside her. She sighed a breath of relief and closed her eyes to catch a quick nap; she had a long ride of 16 stops ahead of her. 20 Minutes had barely passed by before she fluttered her eyes open as she felt a sharp tug on her arm to find that someone had accidentally brushed against her side when sitting down beside her. She scanned the train to find that by now it was clustered with a faces of all different people of different ages and backgrounds. A particular woman stood out to her, she had dark skin and tired eyes, she was grasping on to two large bags in one hand as the other held on to the railing as the train jerked softly. The tired woman looked down at Jyoti and sent a soft smile as her lips curled up in the slightest way to send off a warm gesture. To the left of the woman stood a little girl, not much older than 6 or 7, she held on to the woman’s dress and stared off into the void of blur through the subway train windows, only breaking her gaze to glance back at Jyoti. Suddenly a wave of nostalgia lifted Jyoti up and brought her back to the age of 8 when she took the train for the first time with her mom and remembered thinking of how much older it made her feel. She would see the faces of grown ups all around her, all of which were headed somewhere, holding on to their bags and waiting for their stops patiently, all of which she assumed were either going to work or headed home from work; as she came back to reality she realized she wasn’t so little anymore. She wondered if she appeared as grown up to the little girl as well although she didn’t feel like one. Jyoti smiled back at the woman and her daughter as she got up to let her sit down. With her two heavy bags and the responsibility of her daughter, she needed the seat more than her anyways.
