  1. –How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

In the wake of his metamorphosis, Gregor’s family is united. When Gregor was a human he was the head of the household and no one else worked. But after his metamorphosis they are all forced to work in order to support the families expenditures. Gregor’s mom, dad, and sister start to acquire responsibility and they learn to rely on each other.

  2. I believe Gregor is more powerful after is metamorphosis. Powerful in the sense that he now controls his life without the pressure of supporting his family. Before Gregor transforms into a giant bug, he worked nonstop with the pressure of his father’s debt pushing him everyday. When he transforms, he no longer has to live by that routine, he becomes the center of attention without the pressure of making a living. He looses his ability to communicate with his family, but in a sense he gains control of their attention. This transformation changes the dynamic of his household and he no longer has any significant responsibility. Gregor’s lack of contribution to the household forces other family members including his younger sister to pick up where he left off while he continues to live in the house and still be fed and sheltered.

  3. Explain your understanding of Gregor’s death. How/why does he ultimately die?

I think death is the only option for Gregor after his metamorphosis. Ever since Gregor transforms into an giant bug he could not be who he want to be. He has lost his position as a member in his family despite the fact that he is still Gregor mentally and emotionally. His physical transformation indicates that he is unable to normally behave as an normal human being even though he is trying to hold his humanity so tightly. It’s because of his metamorphosis Gregor’s family members do not accept him. I believe it may because his family members believe he is not Gregor any more, perhaps he looses his value of providing financial support to the family. Gregor is tragic but also fortunate. He is fortunate because he finally realizes the true humanity and relationship of his family members. The death can be a good thing for him since now he does not need to feel guilty and he can release his burden.

  4. –How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

I believe that Gregor’s family transformed in a negative and a positive way in the wake of his metamorphosis. Financially they transformed negatively since they ran out of food and had to sell personal belongings to get by but they also grew positively with the dad actually being able to provide and help out the family. I believe a lot of burden was put onto Gregor when his family easily could have helped out. He did not have the need to work endless hours at a job he dislikes. After learning that the family was not as financially troubled during his normal state I felt a disliking towards the family even though Gregor did not. The sister in the end transforms into someone who first becomes a maternal role in Gregor’s bug life and then later on becoming a woman of her own and taking matters/decisions of what should be done with Gregor. Overall the family goes through a major transformation trying to adapt to hiding a giant bug in their house who is family.

  5. At the end of the second section of the story, Gregor’s father pelts him with apples. What do you think this episode is about?

I believe this was a very impactful scene even though the understanding behind it is not as clear cut as one would hope. When Gregor’s father pelts Gregor with apples, he is going through a metamorphosis on his own. When the story first began, Gregor’s father was looked as a feeble old poor man who was kind hearted and worrisome. However after Gregor’s incident and change, the old man was forced to provide for his family and work at a bank in a low level position. This lifestyle change made him more bitter and resentful towards his son and life in general. I believe the pelting of apples was his tipping point of frustration and he was trying to hurt the cause of this frustration and apples can be symbolized as the fruit of his labor.

  6. –Gregor emerges from his room one last time when he hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers. What is the significance of this? What meaning does music hold for Gregor here?

When Gregor hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers, it brings out his humanity and what he has been missing despite his freedom, which is family. The sound of violin also reminds him of his love for his sister and his desire to send her to the conservatory. he feel those lodgers do not appreciate for her music, he wants her to play for him.

  7. Gregor emerges from his room one last time when he hears his sister playing her violin for the lodgers. What is the significance of this? What meaning does music hold for Gregor here?

What I believe is significant about this scene is that since his metamorphosis, everybody that knows or is around Gregor treats him totally different. Out of everybody in the world, everyone expects their parents to love them no matter what. This wasn’t the case for Gregor at all. His parents treated him like he was a monster more than their own son. Gregor really felt that he was all alone in this new world of his. When he heard his sister playing the violin, it felt like the music gave him more life and hope. When he also realized that it was his sister playing, I felt like he was very impressed by her talent. When she went into Gregor’s room and started playing more music for him, I think that not only Gregor was able to enjoy the music more, but he also had a nice brother, sister bond for a little while. It has been a while since Gregor was able to enjoy someone’s company.

  8. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.

I think that Gregor is more powerful after the metamorphosis. Before the metamorphosis Gregor worked day in and day out to support his family without fail and never received ah sympathy or gratitude from his family. After Gregor’s absurd transformation into a giant bug his family paid more attention to him, and actually cared for him. They did for him what he did for them. His transformation also sparked his family’s metamorphosis; which was his doing. Although indirect Gregor pushes his family forward with his metamorphosis. He has an effect on them that he would not have been able to have as a human.

  9. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.

I think Gregor is more powerful after his metamorphosis. Before Gregor goes through his metamorphosis he was supporting his whole family, travelling and constantly working. He did not have a normal life and everybody depended on him. After his metamorphosis though he was able to take over his life and everybody is giving him the attention and time that he never had before.

  10. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis
In the wake of Gregor’s metamorphosis, the whole family start to taking a job. when before they all depend on Gregor, but now they all get a job and supports themselves.

  11. Gregor is more powerful after his metamorphosis because he is in the spotlight from his family after his metamorphosis. Before Gregor’s metamorphosis, he was working hard for his family. He did not have own his life because he was only one person to make money for his family. However, his family did not help to him for anything. After his metamorphosis, his family began to care about him and to work for supporting themselves.

  12. –How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

Gregor’s family undergoes a metamorphosis of their own in wake of his metamorphosis. Due to his inability to work, his father, mother, and sister all take up jobs to provide income. They all experience complete changes and grow to be better individuals. His father gets a job and becomes more active again. He went from moving and talking like a grandpa to looking like a healthy person again. By the end of the story, the parents also notice how Grete has grown into a beautiful woman. This shows that she had undergone a metamorphosis as well by the end.

  13. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

When Gregor’s family saw Gregor became a giant bug, they look calm. It seems like the importance of Gregor being a human is to pay off his father’s debt and support the family financially. His father is mad at Gregor because he can no longer help him to pay off his debt. His sister takes care of him at first. When Gregor’s behavior is more like a giant bug and less like a human being, she starts to care less of Gregor.

  14. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

After Gregor is transformed into a bug, his family goes through their own metamorphosis. The father goes to work in a bank and is no longer the feeble man who had to depend on his son’s money for his expenses. He mentally and physically transformed as Gregor describes it. The mother also starts working to earn some money. They are now able to support themselves. Grete, the sister, takes responsibility for Gregor and takes care of him. In her eyes of her parents, she transforms into this young woman who is now ready to be married off. In the wake of Gregor’s metamorphosis, every member of his family becomes more independent.

  15. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?
His family rather than caring and helping Gregor are more on the uncaring side. They are all upset because they have to go back to wok and they don’t help Gregor with anything. He has to sit all day long alone in a bed without the help of his family. we can see the selfishness in his whole family and how it was really a one sided relationship.

  16. How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

In the wake of Gregor’s metamorphosis, his family transforms as well. They seem to pull together more than before. Instead of relying solely on Gregor, they pick up responsibilities and help out the household in any way they could’ve. Gregor’s parents started working to earn money and his sister, Greta, takes on the responsibility of taking care of Gregor when he turns into the bug. Not only does Gregor transform, but also his family as well.

  17. –At the end of the second section of the story, Gregor’s father pelts him with apples. What do you think this episode is about?

Following Gregor’s transformation, his father’s frustrations with Gregor increase. Having been somewhat spoiled by his son he is now bitter that he must take up responsibility to ensure the on going financial security of his family. Gregor paid the family’s debts and allowed for their standard of living. He was an undeniable benefit to the family. Following his transformation he became a burden. This culminated in the brutal and over the top attsck on Gregor, which in my opinion was extreme regardless of whether he thought Gregor had actually attacked his mother. As suggested in class I thought the concept that the Odepis complex was at work was interesting. This fight under this theory displayed the father and sons battle for the affection and love of the mother.

  18. The apple that his dad throws at Gregor could symbolizes the beginning of his death. Apple is usually a symbol for death as a reference to the old tale of the bible of Eve and the fruit. Even though the apple is never mentioned as being the fruit. Once it was planted on his back it started to rot and so did his body.

  19. –How is Gregor’s family transformed in the wake of his metamorphosis?

Without help or advice, Gregor’s father shames by Gregor’s alienation and wants to kick him back to his room. The same man who welcomed him back at night now throws the apple to weak insect, which leads to Gregor’s death. Since Gregor transforms into a parasite, he can no longer support family, gradually he and his parents grow apart. The attitude of his parents changes completely. The only one shows sympathy and feeds him is his sister Grete. However, she loses faith and believes that Gregor has no humanity anymore. Gregor’s change positively animates his family go to work and share responsibility together. In the end of the story, they thinks of Grete’s marriage instead of Gregor’s death.

  20. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.

Gregor is more powerful before the metamorphosis because when he was the one that was working he would have more say in the house and more control over how his families life would look like. After the metamorphosis he would have to depend on others for food and no one depended on him. He lost all of his value to the family.

  21. Do you think that Gregor is more powerful BEFORE or AFTER his metamorphosis? Explain your response.

I think Gregor is more powerful after his metamorphsis .Because when he transforms into a bug, he finds that the family is selfish. They cannot even want to care him. His father throw the apple to him and lock him into the room. At the end, he died. However, he frees himself from the bad situation. He is forced to pay back debt to cheif by his father because of this father’s business fell down.He doesn’t need to pay back the debt and support the selfish family. Even though he died, his soul is free.
