What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
I think Wollstonecraft seems interested in overthrowing the traditional roles of woman, and pursuing the modern aspects of woman’s lives. She likes women being independent from men as well as having their own control of their lives and thoughts. In her text, she argues that if a woman only learns how to please the men, then men would be sick and tire and eventually lose their passions on a woman. In other words, I think Wollstonecraft is strategically saying that women would not be cherished by men and even themselves if they are both financially and emotionally depend on men. The rights of women would be taken away easily when they do not have their own thoughts or their ideas are never being valued. I believe Wollstonecraft also reveals that the values of women are way beyond cooking, cleaning and obeying. Women can be as great as men are if they are given the same opportunities. women are most charming when they are freely expressing their believes and their are treated equally.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I believe in the Western hemisphere, women are taught to please themselves rather than simply exist for another man. However in the Eastern side of the world, the values of cooking, cleaning, and being the children’s caregiver is still held in high regard for woman and those who cannot be there for their family in such ways are seen in a negative light. The ideas of a woman being independent was progressive at those times but are now becoming a norm in today’s society as woman have shown to be a dominant force in the working world and know more than the basics of house care.
Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?
When Pope used this line he was referring to “Whatever is” as whatever was created by God. Wollstonecraft uses “Whatever is” as whatever is happening in the present time. She argued that what was happening right then and there in that moment is what is right. She stated that no one knows what the big picture is except God, so how does any man or woman know if her actions are right or wrong. They might be exactly as God intended them to be. Whatever she is, is right.
What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
I think Wollstonecraft wants to make changes role of women and to get rights of women. In 18th century, rights of woman are nonexistent so, women cannot do anything in the society except marriage. Only marriage is the purpose in women’s life. However, women cannot get the their rights even after getting married. It is because that the meaning of marriage is ‘woman is one of her husband’s possessions.’ Wollstonecraft does not understand why women have only one goal, marriage, in their life. She knows it is because of the society which exclude women from everything such as education, politics and so on. I think that this vindication of the rights of woman’s main purpose is to make recognize women’s responsibilities in the society. For example, not only the role of wife, but acquisition of knowledge is also important thing in women’s life. So, Wollstonecraft wants that women to recognize what the role of women and rights of women mean does.
4. What does Wollstonecraft have to say about marriage? In her view, what would allow a woman to be a good wife and mother?
Wollstonecraft believes that marriage should consists of two independent adults where both of them are educated and, together, provide for the family. She highly criticizes the institution of marriage as it is; men work and women basically sell their affection so that the man gives her what she wants. In Wollstonecraft’s view, a woman can be a better wife and mother if she is granted independence from her husband. She believes that women would be better wives if they were allowed to get an education and work, like men do. If granted this independence, women would have a life separate from home, they would be active members of society instead of trophies that men keep at home. If allowed to work and be educated, women would have happier lives because they would feel useful and this in turn would lead to her transmitting this happiness at home to her husband and kids.
4. What does Wollstonecraft have to say about marriage? In her view, what would allow a woman to be a good wife and mother?
Wollstonecraft believes that marriage needs to be handle with care. If a women is trained to be domesticated, she will eventually grow tired of the same routine that keeps her in the home all day. For a marriage to be successful Wollstonecraft believes the wife and mother needs to be happy. In order for the wife to be happy she must CHOOSE to become the wife and mother, women must have the freedom of choice. Without the ability to choose this domestic life women will grow resentful of the life she was forced into and rebel against her husband. One of the most popular forms of rebellion is to cheat. To prevent this rebellion, and to have a “good” wife and mother the husband must not force his wife into a life she doesn’t want to live. A wife will be much happier if she was making the concious decision to commit to being a mother and care taker, she may also be moviated to become better than she was just the day before.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I don’t think women are raised to be pleasing because now they have more liberty. The many more rights than they did in the past. Women can now do all the same jobs men can do and they have the opportunity to get an education. Because of this men see them as equals. Women don’t have to depend on men for anything now there for there for they don’t need to be “pleasing” or submissive. Back than Women had to be raised to be pleasing because that was there only future.
3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I do not think women are still raised to be “pleasing”. Such as in United States, women are encouraged to be independent and self-sufficient. They have an equal opportunity as men to be educated and enter the work force. They are willing to protect their rights, fight for any discrimination against women. Now, women are worked in different working areas. Some of them even have a position in our government. In today, women have achieved a lot, they are not just like traditional women who only know how to cook, take care of child and please men. They have their own careers and interests, they can live on their lives if they want.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I think this question is highly dependent upon which part of the world we are in. Strictly speaking about the United States, I do not think that women are raised to be “pleasing”, to men. Women are highly encouraged to pursue a career, in order to be independent. The American culture is constantly evolving in order to accommodate new norms which empower women. It could be argued that there is no perfect equality between men and women but we have taken a big step forward since the 18th century. Gender roles have changed as today, women are no longer expected to stay at home and take care of the household. Furthermore, all rights are applicable to both men and women, compared to the 18th century where for example, women were not allowed to vote.
Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?
Wollstonecraft interprets Pople’s famous line “Whatever is, is right” by saying that God creates a woman like her and writes a paper about women right is what God wants her to do. If Pope’s “Whatever is, is right” tells us to maintain and satisfy with what we have, then Wollstonecraft does not agree with Pope. Instead, she believes that whatever we question about, it is God’s instruction. It is right to find out the answer of what we question. It is right to change if we think it is wrong. God creates humans to change what is not right.
What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
Wollstonecraft seems to be interested in changing the power that men have over women, as well as their role as the superior sex in society. To do so, she tactfully poses different outcomes to their ongoing situation (women’s continuous submission to men) and suggests that in the end, not emancipating women could negatively affect men majorly. Wollstonecraft wants to loosen the chains on women because after serving as an advocate for The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, she realized that women played significantly little to no role in the document at all. After that discovery, she published her second book to advocate for women to be considered under the same ‘natural rights’ that men are, often being considered the first modern feminist.
3. Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I think over the last two centuries modern feminists like Wollstonecraft have changed the expectations of women across the western world. The opportunities afforded to women have expanded greatly, but to say that remnants of that sort of rearing are gone just isn’t true. Girls are taught that they are supposed to be attractive to boys the moment they hit puberty. Mothers still tell their daughters that “boys don’t like that.” Throughout their lives, beauty products and clothes are shown as ways to become perfect and more pleasing to men. The progression that Wollstonecraft and her successors have pushed forward have done much good, but the struggle is not over.
What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
In “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” by Mary Wollstonecraft, she talks about many aspects of women’s lives that should be changed. Some type of aspects that she talks about are women’s education, power and also their influence in society. She argues that all humans have the ability to reason whether it be man or woman. Since men and women were born with the ability to reason, they should all be treated equal as one.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
In the past and even up to today in certain countries, women have been raised to be “pleasing.” They have been taught how to be the perfect housewife making them dependent of their husband. Presently, in the United States, I do not believe that women are raised like this again. Throughout history, women have progressively made a difference for themselves. Women have learned to be independent from men and have been encouraged to get an education for a good career in any field they desire. I believe that females learn how to more independent each day, however, society still makes it difficult for them.
What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
Mary Wollstonecraft wants to change the lifestyle assigned to women by the society. She wants to change the perception that women are only capable of doing domestic jobs and can’t contribute in jobs men do. She wants change the perception of women in the eyes of men because she, herself is limited in pursuing a career in which she can make a living for herself and support herself. She is overall interested in having women’s lives be to be given the same opportunities as men so they are equal and are their own person without any dependency. She does it change her life and the lives of all women and sway them away from the traditional lifestyle.
2. Wollstonecraft quotes Pope’s famous line “Whatever is, is right.” How does she interpret this line? Does she agree with Pope?
Wollstonecraft does not agree with Pope when she uses the line “Whatever is, is right”. Pope says that you should not question what is happening but instead accept it because that is your path and this is how things are meant to be. Wollstonecraft instead says that God made us one way but if something goes wrong, one should be able to change that, even though we still believe in god. It seems to be a rational argument against Pope.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I believe that today woman are brought up much differently than back then. Today they are taught to think for themselves and take care of themselves rather than just being there to make the mans life easier by cooking cleaning etc. Woman today have many major jobs all around the world and have come a long way in their journey for equality. Over time as this changed the way woman are brought up changed as well. They learn that they are there own person and not there just to “please” others. Woman over the next 100 years are going to make more achievements and prove their rights as independent people.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
In some part of the world, because of culture difference, women are still raised to be pleasing. As far as I known, in Japan, women are stilled raised to be pleasing to their husbands. They are taught to how to take care of their future husbands in early age. In my opinion, women should have same rights as men do. Women should be independent rather than relying on their husbands. Even though women physically weaker than men, it doesn’t mean that women should be inferior to man. They were born equally and this is unalienable rights.
4. What does Wollstonecraft have to say about marriage? In her view, what would allow a woman to be a good wife and mother?
She decries the fact that women do not want to marry the men that they should; they prefer gallant men who excite their emotions but may be frivolous or immoral. When women marry, they expect the passion of their courtship to be sustained throughout the whole marriage. This is unreasonable and can lead to problems when the feelings wane and the husband turns out to have little substance. Sometimes a woman will enter into love affairs to try and stoke her emotions, or she may ignore her husband or tyrannize over him. It is better that women understand that the best type of marriage resembles a friendship. Both partners are equal and have things in common; they should conceive of the other as a companion, not merely a lover. The deep bond of friendship is a better way to have a relationship than to be enmeshed in tumultuous passion. Husband and wife should also not be too concerned with the sexual part of their relationship, as it diverts attention from more important duties. Overall, a happy marriage is one where both man and woman are content with the substance and equanimity of their relationship and conceive of each other as a partner.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
In my opinion, depends on difference situations, the women are still raised to be pleasing. Because the women need to take care of the family. That’s the normal things. In most situation, the men work more hard than the women to support the whole family. The men is willing to see their wife to take care of them and make them happy. However, I believe that the women have the rights with men. The women can work in all position with men. Sometimes the “pleasing” is just a proof of closer relationship between the couple. So I am support the women are still raised to be pleasing
1. What aspects of women’s lives does Wollstonecraft seem interested in changing? Why?
Wollstonecraft seeks to change the role of women in society. She goes in depth on how women who are taught to just be wives and nothing more are actually detrimental to society. If women aren’t able to be independent and develop their own sense of self outside of just being housewives, then they can never truly know who they are themselves. She wants women to have more dynamic roles in society and more chances to be their own person. That way marriages would improve and so would society as a result.
Do you think women are still raised to be “pleasing”? Why or why not?
I would say of course that women are still being raised to be pleasing. Even in the United States women are still being treated to obey. It may not look that way with all the accomplishments that women have done in this country. There is still that negative way that the media portrays women to be fit and slim. I think that is todays “pleasing” not just to please men but themselves that they need to have a certain figure. In the story it talks about how women should be independent that if they are caged up then they will cheat with their husband. In some way women today are being caged up in the same way not physically but emotionally. Some would day they are not being raised to be pleasing towards men because we do not live no longer in a society that treats women as second class citizens. But many other parts of the world do treat women like property.
