I originally thought that if a slave owner lost their slave they would not be so cruel to look for them over the states and won’t let them go over several years. Such was the ego and cruelty of slave owners that even after escaping, one would have to look over their should all the time and keep running away to the end of time. For what I thought was that eventually slave owners would let the escaped ones go and consider them gone but no, they would keep looking for them as to teach them a lesson or to sell them away, they would not accept loss.
This narrative somewhat differs from Fredrick Douglass’s narrative because even though they both suffered from the cruelty of slave owners, his body was not imprisoned for 7 years. He could move around. The way he escaped was through literacy but she had to wait for years with hope that someday she will find a way to get away from all this. Douglass did not have to worry about children but she had to, she was not running away alone but with her children which was much harder because they could slow her down, as much as she loved them, they weighed her down as well as gave her courage.
One of the modern day slavery is through sex trafficking. This happens when women and children are forced against there will into commercial sex, sometimes even kidnapped and smuggled to a country unknown to them where they become victims of sex trafficking. Sometimes their agents promise them factory jobs in another country and when they show up across the border, they are forced into sex trade.
Child labor, mostly in third world countries these children are forced to conduct labor as they are children born into poor families and are not familiar with their rights. Their parents don’t hesitate because to them there children are another form of income as they have seen this happen all there life and it has become very normal for them. Sometimes these children are even kidnapped as infants and led into the world of sex trafficking where they have no idea of the outside world, brainwashed to such an extent.
Forced Marriage is another form of modern slavery which occurs mostly in Asia where women under the age of 18 are married off as they are seen as burden to their family, these incidents take place mostly in illiterate parts of the world. Sometimes the father of the women receives payments and sometimes widows are married off in exchange of money.
Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned about contemporary forms of slavery. I don’t think most of us are as aware of these issues as we ought to be.
