David Wilkes

Following graduation from Baruch with a degree in English Lit (I entered with the idea of majoring in business), I graduated from Boston University School of Law and began practicing commercial litigation; I found myself handling primarily real estate valuation matters, and went back to school for a master’s degree in real estate finance and valuation from NYU, where I then used my English degree to become Editor in Chief of “Real Estate Review” for seven years. I eventually ended up as the Chairman of The Appraisal Foundation in DC, which is the Congressionally-authorized standard-setting body for U.S. asset valuation, and formed my own law practice which has grown over the last seventeen years and is now merging to become even larger, handling only valuation disputes. I have also been the Editor in Chief of the New York State Bar Association’s flagship magazine, “The Journal” for about 12 years now, and oversaw a complete revamping of the magazine in 2005.

I run several national and international real estate and attorney groups, and have worked as the Senior Advisor to several foreign governments on the development of various land reforms, such as working for Egypt in modernizing its home finance system, and Serbia in reforming its property tax system. I’m currently working on and off in West Africa, where I’m attempting to draw foreign investment into real estate; working with a new media company to create content; and also working with various solar and agricultural firms that are attempting to get started; and I’m in discussions with a group of Chinese investors who are exploring the feasibility of creating a new cement company in West Africa; I’ve also made good friends with the new President of Ghana and we are discussing approaches to land reform.
