HW1: Marclay & Arcangel

I think in the Telephones made by Christian Marclay, the artist shows how an ordinary action can be done in many different ways for different purposes. Each time a different person dials the number, there is another feeling like anxiety, happiness, anger etc. Those different emotions are affected by different responses. While reflecting the emotions we are all similar. On the other hand we show some differences. Our aims are more or less the same so the conversations are easily connected to each other. The artist shows how different lives go through the same process. There is always an expectation and it has a beginning and an ending. This is like how we share things. That’s why different people have shown as connected to each other.

In the second video Paganini’s 5th Caprice by Cory Arcangel again people are in different location and different situations but there is a harmony because they are doing the same thing again. Each case can be unique however individuals more or less sharing the same actions or moves. Combination of different skills creates a community and that community shares the same features. By doing the same things with different ways like in the first video, people come together and seem to be naturally communicated. When different pieces come together, there can still be a flow of communication. Different individuals can simply form the whole. Like in the first video there seems to have a conversation between different people.

Each unit comes together to create a process for example the emotions related to the conversations in the first movie and the notes in the second movie. All those units are unique and different but they share same characteristics and can be similar sometimes or come together to create a similar pattern.
