For this analysis, I decided to choose the videos I liked the most and the video I liked the least. The first video, “2 into 1” was my personal favorite. The children were very well dressed whereas the mother was dressed in more casual clothing which seemed like a bit of a role reversal to me. The children looked like little grown men. Something about the words from the children and the mother sounded very unnatural, and not in the sense that it was lip-synced. However, more in the sense that you could hear the extremely opposing views of the children towards the mother and the mother towards her children more clearly since it came from each other’s mouths.
“I Am Making Art,” by John Baldessari wasn’t a video that I particularly liked, however to me, it relates to the first video, “2 into 1”, because they both made me feel very uneasy. I think I disliked “I Am Making Art,” because of the monotony and lack of emotion in the video. Although there wasn’t much action going on during the short film aside from him moving various body parts, the voice saying “I am making art.” sounded very monotone unlike the voices of the children and mother in “2 into 1.” The children were smiling and not composing themselves at times when it was the other child’s turn to speak and the mother had a very endearing tone in her voice. In “I Am Making Art,” the subject is center screen and the wording was repetitive which really emphasized that he was the main focus of the video. With all of that aside, I think the main purpose of the video was to show that essentially anything can be made into art. Art is like beauty, its value is in the eye of the beholder.
