Bruce Nauman’s Pinch Neck used the senses to invite the viewer stimulate the sensatory feelings the subject created in the video. Chris Burden Shoot was similar in that his piece was to recreate a past event so his viewers could feel it happen through his piece.
Pinch Neck, while more difficult to understand the piece’s meaning as a viewer, was more effective than Shoot. The mouth stretching, lip pulling, and neck pinching were strange and abnormal yet they created an experience for the audience. A view could feel the sensations of these motions on their body as they watched. Creating an impact on the viewer means that the viewer interacted with the piece and probably remembered it, if not for it’s strangeness.
Shoot, did not have the same effect on the viewer. It tried to recreate a powerful moment in time but due to the lack of audio quality terribly fails to do so. The weak visuals that come into play when the big shoot is supposed to happen is also disappointing. It’s two blurry men who are using a toy guy, one shoots the other in the arm and walks away painless. It’s boring and forgettable to say the least.
