William Kentridge

I think William Kentridge’s works are historical based and traditional. In the one that’s named “More Sweetly Play the Dance” the hierarchy in the society was so obvious. The music was clearly supporting the tradition and the dance. What I liked the most is the presentation of the video. I felt surrounded by the people in the video and it made it more realistic. Both of the videos made me think of mixed media art works. They were not like real videos but more like a computer based videos. I mean they were looking like made by using different effects and composed of different layers. In “Notes Towards a Model Opera” it was harder to focus on the message because the scene was changing rapidly. However it was again giving me the historical sense because of the papers in the background and traditional sense because of the characters and all those details like Chinese letters. It also had a political side because he was clearly presenting the problems in the society in the video. For example there was a paper saying ‘More fuel in winter’ later comes the president (I am not sure though). This video was more like an animation compared to the other one. Finally, both of them gave me the same taste. It was obvious that the two video are made by the same artist, they presented the same styles.
