Anri Sala’s sprawling exhibition was a real audio-visual treat. I felt like I was navigating a maze with each piece calling out in the darkness. I was particularly wowed by the room that held “Ravel Ravel Unravel.” The huge chamber was filled from floor to ceiling with pyramidal sound-absorbing foam and had two large screens projecting separate pianist’s performances which went in and out of sync. While this area of the exhibition drew the largest crowd, my favorite piece was “Still Life in the Doldrums.” It was composed of four human skulls on top of a snare drum with moving, motorized drumsticks. I enjoyed the dark aesthetic of the piece and I wasn’t expecting to see real human skulls on display at the exhibition!
