Paying Attention by Benni Avshayev HW Blog Part 1/3

In Beller’s “Paying Attention”, the introduction already made clear to me what he is trying to explain. I find it interesting that he described the global economy as an attention economy. Beller says that in our present society there is a value in production. I believe he means that music companies, Hollywood, advertising agencies and all other media and entertainment corporations use their money and resources to gain even more power and wealth. In other words, by catching our undivided attention to turn a profit. He believes attention is now a commodity that can be sold and traded at high prices. I agree with Beller with the fact that attention is another resource to feed Capitalism. I myself am a marketing student in a business school hoping to one day be employed by these large corporations. After reading this article, I haven’t changed my mind about dropping business school or becoming against some sort of corporate agenda. I just keep with myself in the back of my head that attention and time is a powerful resource and that I should not waste it on useless investments or schemes. I would rather work for a company and be the small change on how we do business. There is no way to reverse this cycle of valuable attention. We as a society should only make a choice as to whether we allow greedy businesses to capture our attention with media and propaganda or focus on helping our friends and families with priorities in our lives.
