Artist Statement by Benni Avshayev

Now that I am taking my second new media arts class I feel much more prepared for projects in the future. I never considered myself and artist. I have friends that attended Fiore Laguardia high school. They were talented and artistic students. They forced me to go to museums with them in Manhattan. They have taken me to: the museum of feelings, museum of natural history, museum of modern art and my favorite the museum of sex. At first I did not think much of it. I just thought it was another day to hang out with my friends. After a while, as the paintings and artwork got more intense I started to think there was definitely much more significance in these museums. I gave the artists more credit in a way. I then began going on my own and inviting other friends to join. It was interesting and cheap. What more could I ask for?

Last semester I took an intro to new media arts. I really enjoined it. I felt like a small scale artist because of all the cool editing programs I used and videos I have completed. Fast word to present day, I am taking a higher new media arts course.  My first project is not what I wanted it to be. I was in the process of making an emotional and sort of dark video. It was relative to my personal life situation. Other circumstances have intervened so I made a video with the next best theme. Cats. My cat specifically. As I recorded him I saw that there is nothing complicated about a cat. They eat, use the bathroom and sleep. In the human life, we work, pay bills, go to school, etc. It is a funny parallel from a cats perspective of life and a humans. If I have learned anything from taking media arts it is that art takes time and could never be exactly what you expect it to be. That is why we have more projects to pursue. So we can fix those mistakes from our last attempts.
