The exhibits that I enjoyed were “My Silence” by Mika Taanila and “New Trick” by Jennifer Dalton.
“My Silence” has a perspective of silence that is a bit wierd and humorous at times. I recall the actual scene from “My dinner with Andre” being so profound and unsettling that when the speech is withdrawn it takes a lot of the power out of the scene and redistributes my recollections to the silent nods and reactions of the actors. I thought it was humorous because it’s not of the norm for no words to be spoken and yet intent listening is shown through the actors expression.
The “New Trick” installation has a multitude of video shots on one screen. It follows what would be training sessions but comes accross as a video profile highlighting the efforts and statistics of the woman on screen. It has a powerful effect no matter the smiles on the subject’s face. It comes across as an all encompassing view on the subject’s capabilities as an athlete. The screens help portray a wide array of her capabilities and the points of view have their own story to tell.
