Moving Image Fair

Thursday night I was able to catch the end of the Moving Image Fair. I liked the set up and I thought it was especially conducive to video art (sitting down made it easier to pay attention). One artist that particularly stood out to me was Lorna Mills and her piece “Mountain Light/Time”. As a frequent user of the internet, her work with GIF as an artists medium was interesting to me. I liked the strong use of color. I felt that the vibrancy of her piece helped it to stand out among the others. I also liked the highly digitized rendering of a mountain, which is something we usually see in photography or naturally occurring. Her yellow sky with pixelated mountaintop reminded me of the way Picasso might paint a mountain, or how he might capture it on video in the digital age. In roughly the middle of the hallway the gallery was set up in, I loved the way she set up each piece among all the video screens. It was nice to see more of her work displayed so creatively (in darkness, one on top of the other). The bright colors of her work made the screens look like cascading rainbows and the video screens to me felt like the 21st century picture frame.
