Tacita Dean Exhibition (Extra Credit)

At the Marian Goodman Gallery, I visited the “My English breath in foreign clouds” by Tacita Dean exhibition. I must say it was the most positive exhibition I have ever been too. The main theme was clouds. Clouds in a bright blue sky. Clouds in a dark sort of pre-storm. Clouds in a dessert. Basically, Dean is showing us that on any day there are clouds forming on top of us. And the way they form resembles the feeling of that day. For instance, one of the clouds looks to be the mushroom cloud from the atomic bomb detonation in World War two. From that art I saw the emotion and that our world has been through very shrouded and cloudy days. In another artwork I felt better inside. It was a piece about nice clouds floating on top of mountains. In the front part of the piece there appears to be a ranch or big house with a beautiful pool and glass plated balcony. I think in that piece Dean is describing serenity and peace from the outside world. Many of the dark colored and shaded clouds looked similar and really did not have a message that spoke to me.

Except for one dark shaded cloud. It was a white/gray cloud drawn on blackboard with chalk. Under it was something scribbled in a broken script penmanship. I could not make out the words but I understood what the artist means to say. I envision God being clothed by the cloud. He is silent and uses the chalkboard to reveal his messages to the mortals of earth. It is very simple and delicate and yet very profound. If I were to have taken an eraser and erase the message and the cloud, does that make me a non- believer? Or an atheist? Or maybe it means I have sinned so much that God cloaked himself from my wrongdoings and I choose to erase him from my life. That is how this specific piece made me feel. All of the pieces were intriguing and Dean created astounding pieces of art. I am actually glad I was able to be there.
