In Dante’s Inferno, we discuss about the interesting sins listed in his version of Hell. There are some sins that don’t exist in our society today (or rather, lack there of). Hypocrisy is a sin listed much further down the hierarchy, but there seemed to be a general consensus that everyone is a hypocrite, and it really shouldn’t be listed there after all.
Our ideals reflect what we consider to be bad and good, and in this case, we have evolved over time to what seems to be Dante’s worst nightmare. What he justified as bad is what we have acknowledged to be apart of human nature. We are not perfect, and that might frighten Dante. For him, imperfections in any way are unjustifiable. We must be pure, perfect samaritans – but does that sound realistic? From what we believe, everyone at one point may have sinned (in regards to Dante’s version of Hell or not). For Dante, it seemed that if you committed ANY sin, you were destined for Hell.
But this brings up the idea that sins, over time, can be justified dependent on the era and person – and maybe even provide a gateway to Heaven regardless of certain actions. Do you believe that it’s possible to enter Heaven even with sins (what you consider to be sins) under your belt? If so, what sins are truly indicative of an entry to Hell? What are some sins that aren’t so bad?
I agree with this post especially the fact that Dante would most likely heavily disapprove of modern society and how things that he said would make you destined for hell such as Hypocricy and Gluttony are now exhibited by a huge portion of people in society. I believe however that sins like this contrary to Dante’s beliefs wouldn’t just subject a person to hell as in modern society it is recognized that Dante’s layers of hell were highly exaggerated to scare people away from comitting sins. Certain sins such as murder are more realistically explained by Dante to send people to hell as sins such as murder have much more severe consequences.
Hi Anh, great post! I too agree with that Dante would not approve in the world we live in today, because half of the sins that he put in his book are considered ‘normal’ for us today. For instance, the Soothsayers, people who tries to see future; in our world today, people use this to make money and some people are willing to pay money to have a fortune-teller tell them about their future. But there are still sins that even our generation today does not accept, such as violence. Someone from class said that they would completely put the the violence section in the lower circles, and I agree with that. Violence is something that happens everyday in our country, but we still consider it as one of the biggest sins.
I agree with you with you began discussing about no one is perfect . What caught my eye is the question, if whether or not a person can enter heaven if they have sin and if so does it matter how bad they sinned on a scale of 1-10. I believe a sin is a sin, there’s is nothing worse than another sin. Everything should be treated equally however it doesn’t mean that a person should be prohibit to enter heaven after all we are humans , we all make mistakes . So even if someone has done something bad shouldn’t they deserve a chance at least a chance to prove themselves.
I believe that people can enter to heaven even after committing sins. There is not one person in this world that can honestly say they have not committed a sin. Lying is a sin and each of us lies at least one time a day. So who decides what is punishable to go in hell for eternity and what may be absolved and allowed into heaven. To me it is unfair that the writers found in Dante’s inferno were not given entry to heaven. It is not their fault for having been born in a time without God they should not suffer because of this. There will always have to be a heaven and hell to represent the good and evil in this world but at what cost are we judging those who have committed even the slightest of sin should they really be punished for eternity?
