Destiny?
Today in class we were discussing about how Macbeth became king and once he became king he was willing to do whatever it took to stay on top. By killed a lot of people, he even changed a lot as a person completely from the very beginning of the story. He went from looking as a hero to the villain of the story. Lady Macbeth played a huge role as well to what he became because all she kept telling him to do was not to be scared and just kill Duncan but this also back fired because she made him into a monster. Now I want to bring back the fact about the part of the story were Macbeth speaks to the three witches and they tell him the future of what’s going to happen, by the end of the story everything that the prophecies says is true. But he spend so much time trying to make it not come true that he ended up doing himself in because of it. Here’s my question do we choose our Fate or are we destined with the fate that is given to us. Like for example is it that you are destined to work at McDonalds but you want to be a doctor; but no matter how hard you try; you’re still in the same situation no matter what you do. Or there is a way to make the destiny you want it to be.
I agree with Trishan. The ultimate sin is murder. By killing someone in cold blood you essentially sell your soul. Therefore it is only natural that Macbeth changed from the beginning to the end of the story. Too answer your question; I think we have the power to choose our fate. I am a strong believer in the notion that we have the ability to change our futures. We have the ability to choose our fate because we decide what the future holds for us. If you are a McDonalds worker but would like to be a Doctor you can change your position if you put your mind to it. I feel as if the answer to this question is all about mindset and perspective. If you have the mindset that your fate is already determined for you and that you cannot change it then the reality is that you will not change your destiny. On the other hand if you do believe you have the power to change your destiny and determine your fate then you will have the power to do so if you put your mind to it.
What becomes of our existence is wholly dependent on how we choose to carry ourselves, after adversities or opportunities have materialized in our lives. In addition to this, people must acknowledge alternate routes in life—we are not married to a specific journey, so it is wise to not bury yourself by restricting your own freedom, or allowing others to deter you from pursuing what may seem unattainable.
Sometimes we must produce our own “doors”, so to speak. Instead of waiting for a positive change, such as the chance to become a doctor, to fall into your lap, you must exercise your willpower and vie for ways to become one without dawdling. If failure is etched into one’s past, then it’s crucial that they reflect on why success escapes them. By looking hard enough, I’m certain people will figure out what’s interfering with their endeavors, unless there’s an external factor that’s outside of their control. In this world there are elements that cannot be manipulated, and in that situation you might require aid from others. While anyone can settle for “less”, it does not have to end that way.
Hi Trishan,
The question you brought up is very interesting. In Macbeth, destiny is portrayed as unchangeable. As you mentioned, Macbeth spent part of the story trying to change the fact that Banquo’s son would one day become king but it ended up coming true. Nowadays it is almost ignorant to think that your destiny could be prophesized in such way. I think all humans have the power to change their destinies. However from the day we are born we are assigned some titles that could limit the “destiny” you want. Unfortunately, factors such as gender, race, sexuality, class, ethnicity and so on, limit our power to be able to change our fates drastically.
Destiny itself is a tricky idea who are we to say what the future hold for each of us. In part I believe we make our own destiny based on the decisions we make on a daily basis. Whose to say what our destiny is precisely I think if you know your destiny you spend so much time trying to avoid it that you end up fulfilling this path set out for you. I believe this was the case with Macbeth he was so obsessed with avoiding what the witches foretold that he spent his life killing those he thought would stand in his way. The fear of his destiny was eventually his downfall.
I think that we like to believe that we can choose our own destiny. I think that as humans, it’s unnerving to believe that our fate is simply decided for us, and we have no control in the rest of our lives. I do believe that hard work and dedication can get us farther in life. I do not believe one should sit back and relax and say, “oh well, I don’t have to do any work because fate will get me to where I am supposed to be.” We are supposed to do everything we morally can to put us in the best position. Macbeth wasn’t denying fate, or going along with fate. He was messing with it. If something is truly destiny, it WILL happen on it’s own. Without human intervention.
