Profile Analysis

This profile was done entirely through research which I found fascinating considering how long it is. It speaks on the intense relationship between former dancer turned reality star Blac Chyna and her world wind decent into the Kardashian World. From being best friends with Kim West to being shunned by the family after her break up with the    still up and coming rapper Tyga. The angle of the article is to tell the story of how an African American girl from around the way found herself pregnant and engaged to the last male Kardashian and how she did it all on her own terms.

Woolfe’s profile in The Telegraph

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/06/steven-woolfe-profile-who-is-the-ukip-mep/

The Telegraph article profiled Steven Woolfe, the presumptive leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party, which lost its former reader after she abdicated her position after 18 days on the job.

The story’s angle seems to be Woolfe’s position in UKIP, especially now that the previous leader abdicated her position. The parts that were the most effective were the ones which identified his current position within the party and his conflicts with other party members, including an instance in which he was punched in the face in public by one of his co-workers.

Profile: Talleen Abu Hanna

Talleen Abu Hanna, a resident of Israel was born in a “mans” body. Since a young age, Talleen knew that she was different. During her teen years, she had begun to express herself in a variety of new ways. She would steal clothing and makeup from her mother and sister so that when she would go out to social gatherings or parties, she would be able to do so as herself and not in the body “god” had given to her.

At the age of 15, she met a woman who like her was trapped in a “mans” body, only this woman had undergone a procedure to make the switch. Talleen could not believe such a thing even existed. She was all for it. The only problem that remained was what her parents would think about her transition. Unfortunately they did not take it well. Living in a place like Tel Aviv, which is a very conservative Palestinian society, being accepted in cases such as this one are not likely and for Hanna that was reality.

Now, Talleen has went on to become Israel’s first transgender beauty queen. However, she is not stopping there as she will enter the international transgender beauty pageant. Though she remains without any contact with her father, she says “My father should be proud of me, my father is the father of Miss Trans Israel”.

Assignment

This article is featuring a photographer, Annie Leibovitzs and her personal project “Women: New Portraits”. I think what works in this article is the momentum of continuing women empowerment. A woman is working on her dream project of featuring the life of other women. The article not only showcases the well-known publishers and celebrities Leibovitzs had work for but also reveals her personal story behind the project.

The angle of this article is how Leibovitzs reworked on her project which she started with her friend 15 years ago, and the difference between then and now.

Profile Analysis

I was reading a profile about Barack Obama, called “Obama’s Way” in Vanity Fair.
The article showed a private live of the U.S. President. The purpose is to understand and to see how the decisions are made. The article began with a description of how American invaded Libya in order to save its citizens from a massive massacre that was planned by Syria in 2011. To show how Obama decided to save Libyans, and, how he made other decisions, the reporter, Michael Lewis, spent six months with President. He went inside President’s daily routine that included basketball game where President showed his undeniable competitiveness. He went into the White House and was present at the Oval Table meeting where the vital decisions were made. He even visited President’s private residence and saw where Obama enjoys spending his quiet time. He flew with Obama on a private plane where Obama could spare only 30 minutes to answer a few questions about his emotions and gave the reporter a list of principles that any presidents should a have.
I love how the reporter transitioned the story. He kept coming back to the Captain Tyler Stark who was a navigator in the first air force plane that dropped the bombs in Libya and whose plane was attacked. Tyler Stark end up in the middle of a desert at night while non-knowing if he would be captured by rivals or peace-makers in Libya.

Two stories with two different perspectives: how President’s decision affected soldiers and their families, people in Libya who were grateful to the U.S. for involvement, criticism that followed by Republicans who were the ones insisted being involved in the conflict.

The main angle, I thought, was to show on which principle president based his decisions. That it takes more than a discussion at the Oval Table, it takes also intuition and taking in consideration not only what President’s advisers tell him but also what an opposition thinks, what people think and expect. There is so much more to what outsider does not see. It is a job, as President mentioned in his last quote to the reporter,

There is such an element of randomness in who gets this job. What am I here for? Why am I walking around the Lincoln Bedroom? That doesn’t last long. A week into it you’re on the job.”

Jeremy Lin: Profile Analysis

Jeremy Lin, the only Chinese-American NBA player plays for yet another team. But this time, he returns to the state that gave him all the fame in the first place: New York. The article details his comeback story and how this time around in the Brooklyn Nets organization, it means something completely different for Lin. Linsanity caught fire in New York and as mentioned in the article Lin doesn’t just bring a persona of any basketball player. Lin unites the asian community all around the boroughs in his underdog story and uprising of an Chinese-American NBA player. The identity of an Chinese-American player sets the scene for future generations to be inspired to follow in his footsteps. The effectiveness of this article is through the promotion of his name only. The buzz he generates causes more ticket sales and opportunities for basketball to be prominent in the Asian community. Jeremy Lin transcends the stereotypes and revolutionizes the pursuit to discover one’s identity.

News Peg: Jeremy Lin joining the Brooklyn Nets.

Story angle: Jeremy Lin, redefining the stereotypical Asian. Even though he attended Harvard, Lin revolutionized the Asian community through basketball. His global presence offers identity to Asian generations that doubt their pursuit to play basketball. Jeremy Lin is an icon of the Asian community, especially in Taiwan.

This quote defines it all: As the only Chinese-American in the N.B.A., Mr. Lin represents a new “model minority,” said Peter Kwong, a professor of urban affairs at Hunter College.

FinD A ProfiLe Story

Some of the parts that were effective in this profile story; out of my own beliefs include the fact that how later on in this article, the writer of this article, BArBArA ELLEMAN, exposes to the reader of this text how she and Jerry Pinkney made contact in person on a couple of occasions.

Another interesting part of this profile was that the writer of this article made sure to provide evidence on specific stylistic elements that are used by Jerry Pinkney that makes him a unique star of his own artistic craft. This effect was made then by refercing different work made by Jerry Pinkney over the course of a few decades, and how there are details put out in his work to create a deliberate effect on the people that view them.

Last but not least, another interesting feature of this article is that it makes mention of important people of Jerry Pinkney’s life in such a way that it shows the viewer of this text not only how Jerry influenced the work of others such as his friend Julius Lester, or his wife Gloria Jean Pinkney, but how some of the works that were put out by those close to Jerry’s personal circle had influenced him as well.

And just to connect bacc to the main angle of this story, in my own views once again, the main intent of this article was not just to announce Jerry Pinkney’s acceptance of the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2016 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal. But rAther, this article uses that achievement to further introduce who Jerry Pinkney is, what some of his most notable works and achievements were, mention some of the important people in his life that he was influenced by and who he influenced himself, as well as some of his unique stylistic choices that separates his own talent from those of other illustrators or artists.

Profile Analysis

I think one part that was really effective was how Jill Abramson actually inserted herself in the story. It’s rare for that to occur in an article but Abramson offers valuable insight as she has covered HRC for years; it also helps to know that HRC doesn’t like Abramson, so this article doesn’t strike as inherently biased.

The multiple perspectives throughout the story aid in the way the narrative is spun. We begin with her acceptance of the Democratic nomination this year; throughout the article, we see glimpses of her early years, her mistakes from 2008, other glaring blemishes along the way.

All in the all, these vantages in the angle: that HRC is on the Democratic ticket because, despite all the adversity that has come her way, she has tackled it head on, learning from her mistakes, and playing to her strengths.

Malala Yousafzai Profile

In this profile, the writer outlined both Malala’s Yousafzai’s struggles and successes. It depicted the tragedy of her being shot by the Taliban for standing up for the right of education, to her overcoming the injury and winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013. It didn’t dwell on the shooting, but focused on her perseverance. In this profile, I think the angle was to shed light on an influential person that many are unfamiliar with. It was meant to prove how much Malala believed in education and what she went through to fight for her beliefs by describing every part of her journey.

Profile Assignment – Woman asked to move seats on flight

An 81-year-old woman, Renee Rabinowitz, was asked to switch seats on a flight, because an orthodox Jewish man said it was against his beliefs to sit next to a woman. When she was young, she and her family fled Europe during the Nazi occupation.

The angle: Passengers shouldn’t be able to decide who can sit next to them or not based on their own ideologies.
