FIFA World Cups are known for having a particular soccer ball that is played with in each match of the tournament. These balls are often given names, generally by the host’s citizens themselves, this was the case in the 2014 World Cup, as Brazilians voted for their tournament’s soccer ball name to be ‘Brazuca’. The name had a meaning to this Brazilian nation, according to Mureithi, it meant “pride in the Brazilian way of life and mirrors their approach to soccer. It symbolizes the passion, emotion, pride and goodwill to all.” The ball was a connection that brazilians decided on, in 2014 not all Brazilians wanted the World Cup happening because based on Ben Smith, they believed the country should use all the money on different things like education and poverty, and problems the country was facing.
Many brazilians thought FiFA shouldn’t host the World cup and protested against it. After the World Cup not much of these protests weren’t present because the 2014 World Cup was a success for the country. This shows how the world cup in 2014 was a connection between Brazilian people themselves because not all the country was unified and excited about the World Cup, but the Brazuca was an important symbol that Brazilians had that soccer spirit and thier national pride still inside of them.
These pictures present the other side of Brazilian citizens who don’t want the World Cup.
