Narrative First Draft Review

Lesson Materials: For the student-facing pedagogical materials needed to teach today’s class, please open the following page: Narrative First Draft Review Lesson Materials.

Lesson Objectives: 1. Understand how to conduct peer review, specifically for revising one’s content, organization, and aspects of one’s rhetorical situation; 2. Learn to develop organizational statements; 3. Learn about and practice reflective writing; 4. Practice conducting peer review of higher order concerns and take some time to practice revising using peers’ feedback, applying what was learned in readings about the writing process.

Connection to First Major Paper/Project: Today’s lesson offers students the opportunity to see how a good story is written in terms of content, organization, and rhetorical awareness

Connection to Course Goals: An important course goal is to offer students the opportunity to analyze texts in a variety of genres and today’s lesson meets this goal by focusing on the narrative genre. Students will also engage in an in class writing activity that will help them make progress in their writing process, thereby emphasizing the idea of writing as a process. Students will also practice reflecting on how genre, audience, and purpose affect a piece of writing.

Sequence of Activities: 1. Learning about and practicing peer review and reflective writing; 2. practicing peer review and the writing process

Activities

1. Review (15): Review Amy Tan’s story and other ideas discussed in the previous class about tranlingualism, the definition of literacy, and how to write a literacy narrative.

2. Peer review (45 min + 45 min): Go over handouts and PPT notes in the course site to discuss peer review and reflective writing. Notes and instructions will include instructions for learning activities, so review them ahead of class to refresh your memory and review how to proceed with the class. Proceed in the same order outlined in the PPT.

Practice (45 min): Students then make corrections and add detail to their work based on the recommendations of their peer. The teacher will circulate throughout this point of the lesson to facilitate this process further. It may also be instructive for the teacher to model a successful peer review.
