Ethics Workshop

The Ethics workshop I went to was all about making the right business choices.  It didn’t mean “right choices” in the conventional sense, rather it was about making ethical decisions in the corporate world (where sometimes they can be lacking).  The speaker gave a list of scenarios for which we were to choose either “yes” or “no”.  Each side of the room stood for either the affirmative or the negative and we were to walk over to whichever “decision” was right to us.  For example, if your boss was caught embezzling funds for the company, would you report him, even if that meant potential termination for you?  I was surprised at the result of several of these questions; people were so willing to make unethical decisions if it meant success for themselves.  Overall, I thought this workshop was very informative and enlightening.  It reminded me that in such an unregulated world of business, it is very easy to make the wrong decisions and not to fall into the trap.

Community Service

As far as community service goes, I’ve been involved with teaching Sunday school for over 4 years.  The United Muslim Association is an organization centered in central Jersey that operates religious schools for children ages 5 through 17.  I volunteered as an Arabic teacher for 3 years and an Islamic studies teacher for 1 and a half.  Every Sunday, I spend 4 hours in classrooms teaching 8th, 4th, and 6th graders.  It’s a great experience being a leader and knowing that so many young faces look up to you as a role model.  It does entail responsibility and dedication but the reward is something else entirely.  I love working with kids and every week feels like fun and hardly any work.  Teaching is a great way to do community service, whether you’re doing it for academic, athletic, or spiritual purposes.

Personal Experience Workshop

In this workshop we had a mediator who taught us the best way to go about resolving a conflict. She told us that in a case between two individuals, a third party person, the mediator, steps in and talks with both parties and tries to come up with a solution. The mediator went on to say that some people try their hardest to pretend a conflict is not there. These cases usually occur in relationships and are ignored for fear of causing problems that could possibly end said relationship. I felt that it is good to know that there are people in the school who can help you with arguements even if you are someone like me who does not have problems with anyone bacause I’m too cool to be hated.

Club Fair

I went to the club fair knowing that walking through that gym would be worse than driving your car in the city.  Nevertheless, the amount of clubs were of no surprise to me, but I did not find any club that I can really commit to.  At least not at this time.  I feel  that students are push too much into commiting to these on school orginizations.  I will take my time in seeking an extra curricular acitivity that will suit me.  I already am part of the Hillel club on campus, but there is not much to commit to.  I just go to them and participate in a night class once a week and get free food.  The club fair gave me an idea to start my own club.   The question is, what club should I start?

Study Abroad

I went to the study abroad workshop and I was enlightened in all the opportunities available for me to study overseas.  I know that I am only a freshman but plaaning classes for me brings the overseas study factor into my planning.  I plan to go sometime next year and study abroad.  I was impressed by what the Swedish representatives had to say, but I was thinking more about Italy or Israel.  That worshop convinced me that studying abroad is not an option, but a mandatory thing.

Food Drive

I know that I am really late in putting up a blog about the food drive but my computer caught a really nasty virus. Anyway, its always good to give to others. I put in the box chicken broth, green peas, pink salmon, and mixed veggies. I always feel good when I give to the less fortunate. Every day there is a homeless man by the my subway I always give him some money partly because he makes a sad face when people ignoring and also because if it were me in need of help I would hope he would do the same for me.

Art Gallery

I attended a workshop at the Art Gallery at Baruch, called the Sidney Mishkin Gallery.  The workshop was titled “The Nature of Landscape/Photo.”  There were many photographs on the walls of the gallery with small descriptions below them.  Although I am not a major advocate of art, I have to say that I enjoyed the workshop and am  impressed that Baruch has an art gallery of its own.  This further speaks to the diversity and opportunity at Baruch.

AIESC

I attended the AIESC workshop with Mike, Charles, and Jamal.  AIESC is the study abroad program and the leaders of the workshop were very informative of the opportunities of studying abroad.  AIESC offers trips to many countries in Europe, the Caribbean, and South America among others.  Although I felt it is a bit expensive, I would still consider studying abroad even if it is not this year.  The leaders of the workshop were also very helpful when I asked specific questions about studying abroad such as what semester it is recommended to study abroad.

Club Fair

For the student life workshop, I went to the Club Fair, just as most of my classmates did.  It was nice to see all the clubs and fraternities Baruch has to offer.  It did not really feel like a workshop to me, it felt more like an insight to life at Baruch.  Many clubs also gave out free things, which was nice.  I enjoyed the Club Fair and I recommend it if one wants to learn about many opportunities at Baruch.
