Enrichment Workshop

During the enrichment workshop today, we took a quick tour around a display of Theresa Bernstein’s paintings. When our guide explained how Bernstein usually focused on this central color that brought her painting together, I started noticing the pattern in many of her paintings. It made me like her paintings even more because I loved how she incorporated that idea into most of her pieces. Two of my favorite paintings were the “Spray of Flowers” and a dark pastel painting during sunset (whose name  I can’t remember). The “Spray of Flowers” was very simple yet beautiful. The colors caught my eye right away and the simplicity and elegance of the painting really made it more than just a vase with flowers. The second painting caught my eye because of the central goldish color in the sky that pulled the painting together. The darkness at the bottom of all the houses contrasted really nicely with the “sunset” colors. Once again, it was simple but beautiful. Ultimately, the workshop introduced me to the works of a great artist.

Affordable Care Act Article

The NY Times article covers exactly what was foreshadowed during the signing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. There was strong opposition to the ACA from the start, and it is no surprise that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the states on the aspect of expanding Medicaid. It is really upsetting and astonishing to hear that about 14 million people in poverty will be left uninsured, but this is mostly because that some states holding off on Medicaid do not have the resources themselves. Their poverty rates are high and simply going through with the ACA would be to expensive. Also, I do not think that the act of not expanding Medicaid is purely discriminatory, but rather a smart decision on account of these states when looking into the expenses and outcomes. Lastly, though ACA does seem like a great health care plan, providing for Americans, it has several flaws and even if passed it would still leave millions uninsured.

A look into my world…

My slideshow represents my life, the people I hold close and the things I value or take an interest in. The first slide is of what I value the most–my family. My parents are the most important people in my life, my sisters (plus my cousin)  are my best friends (extremely lucky to have great siblings), and my niece is like my “first child” because my sisters and I helped my cousin raise her. The second slide is of my second ‘family’…my friends. They say the friends you make in high school go a long way, and I could not agree more. I’ve known my friends since freshman or sophomore year of high school and we have been inseparable since, regardless of the fact that we go to different colleges now or live far from each other…we always make time somehow. The last section is a little compilation of all my interests. I am a food fanatic. I absolutely love trying different foods, and learning about the culture behind them. The picture of the puppies is to symbolize my love for animals. I put a picture of a basketball because I enjoy playing the sport and because I’m a huge college basketball fan. My interest in music is kind of different from most teenagers today. I love music from the swing era, and the picture is of one of my favorites from the 60s: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The foresty picture is of Lohrberg Park, a park in Germany that I visited two years ago. I really appreciate the beauty of nature and am always in awe of the things around me. I want to travel more and visit parks like Lohrberg park where you really capture the beauty of nature. Lastly, I enjoy reading…hence the picture of the bookshelf.
And there you go…a quick look into my life.
