Who Is Erica?

I play no instruments and I can’t sing, but music is still a huge part of my life and has been since before I was born. While pregnant, my mom would put headphones on her belly for me to listen so I guess that pretty much started it all for me.

1) Kiss of Life by Sade because it’s one of the songs I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. My mom played a lot of Sade for me growing up and the song makes me feel close to my mom in a way.

2) Being that I’m Dominican I grew up in a house with lots of Spanish music and if my playlist could be 20 songs long you’d see how big a part of me that is. I picked Dame Otro Oportunidad by Raulin Rosendo because it represents my culture, my childhood, and to a large extent makes me feel close to my dad.

3) I Wanna Be Your Lover by Prince because who doesn’t love Prince!? I could write forever on him and it was so hard to pick one song but its just fun and makes me wanna dance.

4) Like a Prayer by Madonna…self-explanatory. Madonna is iconic and she was always a household favorite.

5) Butterflyz by Alicia Keys is my favorite song ever to exist. Alicia Keys was like a turning point in my life when 6 year old Erica heard Fallin’ for the first time and it was a struggle not to make this whole playlist Alicia Keys but she does get 2 slots I couldn’t help it.

6) Troubles by Alicia Keys is a song that has gotten me through every rough patch in my life. It’s just like if you’re worried let it go and don’t be afraid to feel whatever your feeling as long as you remember at the end of the day its for a reason and you’ll grow from it.

7) My Mind is Ramblin’ by The Black Keys is sacred. This song I don’t even play for fun it only comes in certain settings and it’s a recent discovery but it accompanied me all summer on lots of late nights with my closest friends.

8) 505 by the Arctic Monkeys is probably my favorite song by them and it’s so chill.

9) I’m In It by Kanye West is also sacred. I will totally go out there and say smoke before listening because it’s a billion times better (if you know the smoke I mean *covers mouth*). My best friend and I always share this “you know what time it is” look before playing and it’s definitely a song of my summer.

10) Wildboy by Machine Gun Kelly because again this summer was just really great and that is my theme song. Once a day I play it and its like I can smell the park slope Brooklyn nights its nostalgic but also hype at the same time.

That’s pretty much me and I wish it could’ve been longer!

  1. I like Sade as well, she’s so soulful. Kanye is one of my favorite rapper and “Im in it” is one of the best songs off his last album

  2. I listen to the Black Keys, too!
