Jamie Chen NY TIMES Blog Post #2

1. At first, my group decided on a theme that we would all agree on. After picking the theme, each member were responsible for 2 NY Times articles. Then we chose the club fair as our Bearcat post since we have already went and don’t need to pick another one.

2. The experience brought us closer. My group members communicated and got along well. It is always awkward to meet new people and having to collaborate with them on a project, but as time went on it got more comfortable.

3. I learned that public speaking and presenting isn’t my best. I still have a lot to improve on.

4. When my peers were presenting, I tried to learn what each article was about and how it could affect my life or other’s around me. Overall it was fun and interesting.

5. Watching others present allowed me to learn how they prepared for presentations. It taught me how I can improve my own presentations.

6. I learned a lot about things that happened in the last month that I never knew about. Such topics include technology, food, and many more I wouldn’t research about.

Jamie Chen NY Times Article #1

In the NY Times article “Neighbors Won’t Give Candy Like This” by Melissa Clark, she states that Halloween candy is a big thing for both kids and adults. There are a lot of holidays where candy is given out but Halloween is the biggest one. Although everyone likes the taste of candy, they’re obviously harmful to your health. The author goes into how she pulled out specific ingredients in candy and make her own healthier candy. For example, she used goat cheese to make almond bars, which contained less sugar, taking more to cause a toothache. These candies she made are to be appealing to adults, so they wouldn’t steal their kids candies while trick-or-treating. I’m sure there are many other recipes you can follow to make your own healthier candy than buying those full of sugar at the grocery store this Halloween.

The first picture is a picture of my high school logo, Brooklyn Tech. It is where I grew up in life the most and found my clique. They’ve been with me through 4 years and most of them are still going to the same school as me. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through high school without them all. Secondly, it is a picture of a barbell with a bed. These things represent me because not only do I enjoy weight lifting and pushing myself to all that I can do.  I also like to sleep and rest. Handball is a sport that I’ve played throughout high school. I met and learned a lot from people just by playing handball at the park with friends or strangers. It just brings everyone together. Football was the first sport I enjoyed playing, during my junior high school years. I have a picture of Brooklyn because that is where I grew up and will always be home. Steak is something I enjoy eating since it contains a lot of protein, which is something essential to weight training. Carvel represents me because that’s where I work. Working there has been fun and it allowed me to meet all these new people, my co-workers. Finally, I have a picture of Brooklyn Tech wrestling. I enjoyed watching wrestling and supporting my school’s team since one of my best friends was captain of the team. The other co-captain was also one of my friends and watching him wrestle was always exciting. Although I couldn’t wrestle for my school because of time issues, I would like to know how far I would’ve gotten in high school wrestling.
